The problem is fixed so not asking for tech support in the forum, just asking a question because it has me puzzled.:(

Recently I changed the name and password for my WIFI as I have many times before. My new WIFI name showed up and my laptop connected as soon as I entered the new password but no cell phones would connect. Granted it was a long password but within the allowed limits of length and characters allowed on both Samsung and Apple phones.

Because of the length of the password thinking the real problem might be they were typing it in wrong after a few tries I sent it in a text so family could copy and paste it into the password box. No phone was ever able to connect. The error message varied depending on which phone it was. So I shortened the password and phones connected.

So my question is if the password is within the allowed length limit and allowed characters of the phone why will they not accept the password? We tried 5 different phones and as mentioned some were Apple and some Samsung. Never had this problem before and don't want to repeat it when I next change my password. :(

Just scratching my head on this one.:confused

    Hi Kat

Likely I'm talking crap! but here goes my theory! I just wonder if while in a router you can add a specific number of characters in a password, that specific phones cannot cope with long passwords, also can they cope with non standard characters?

Is it also that you may need to delete the wifi connection in a phone first before connecting back to a newly changed passworded router?

Not had the issue you had so just speculating above.

    Hey David
Yes we did try deleting all WIFI connections after the first try and failure to connect, but it did not help. So your first theory makes as much sense as anything I could come up with.
    Just baffled me.

Mobile wifi chipsets have weird things imposed in their drivers. It was probably more to do with the channel and type of wifi encryption being used. Sometimes just rebooting the router fixes it.

Here is an example of how goofy wifi drivers can be. I had a Droid Turbo that hooked to my 5ghz wifi fine. I now have a Nexus 6 that doesnt even see my 5ghz wifi. Yet, my Nexus 6 supports 5ghz. It just so happens it doesn't accept the upper channels I use.

Both the Nexus 6 and Turbo have the same wifi chipset. Both are made by Motorola. Both released around the same time.

Also, when it comes to some versions of Android stores your wifi prefs under /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf and includes password. If that were never to get deleted or changed...

Adrynalyne I did try rebooting the router after more than one phone would not connect but it did not occur to me to change the channel. Anyway as all the phones are connecting now I am reluctant to change anything for a little while. ;) Otherwise I might have a mutiny on my hands. LOL

I am the router overlord in my house, so I know what you mean. Shoulda seen the response when I started lowering bandwidth to certain devices ;)

Yeah Channel setting or interference did not first think of, but as Adryn as posted I can see the merits in that as never know what other home devices may mess with signal from a router.
