CF to USB adapter?

I don't think one exists, so I was wondering if anyone has ever tried this or know where I might be able to find plans for such a project.

I'd like to take a CF card, take it apart and solder a USB cable to the CF bus. I think there must be more to it than that.

I have a PDA which also serves as my MP3 player. The problem is, it has both a CF and SD slot, but no USB port. It also has a mini-out. Since I already have this mounted in my car and can plug the mini-to-mini cable into the cars head unit, I was thinking of making the PDA a "hard drive based" car audio system.

I currently have a 1 GB CF card that can't hold a tenth of my audio collection. I think they are currently up to 6 GB CF cards, which would hold a generous amount of audio, but the price for those is astronomical (around $600 - $800)

So I was thinking. Maybe I could take an external USB hard drive, cut off the A end of a USB cable, take apart a CF card and somehow solder the USB cable to the CF cards bus.

The external hard drives power can be provided by the cars 12V.

Sound do-able? Or just a stupid idea?

For $600-800 you would be able to buy 10 1GB cards with the price near $50 and rebates/online coupons, etc maybe 15......

 

True, but switching them while driving could get a little hectic!
