    Hey there,

Earlier today i noticed a clicking like noise coming from my pc while playing a game. I opened it up and noticed one of the fans attached to my cooler master Hyper T4 CPU cooler would stop and start up again once in awhile. I then went to check my fan speeds under AI Suite 2, its showing the fans rpm is at 675000 rpm :confused Any idea why its showing such an extremely high rpm? and why the fan keeps restarting again?

I'll post a screenshot of it and my dxdiag.

One question i have are you using any kinda software that slows or speeds up the fan.

This could be a sign of a failing fan,Or could be a nother sign of a failing power supply unite.

First if you are able to replace the fan it self it is the cheapest option.

I have never heard of a fan going that high.

I have the highest air flow fans in my desktop delta fan 5200 RPM,240.96 CFM the only time they sound that high is when you first turn your system on.Plus i have a speed fan controller added to system.

Sounds like there might be a bug in that program there.A lot of times with that auto tuning software can mess up system.Over clocking things when it is not needed.

No way your fan is spinning that fast - the blades and bearings would self-destruct way before then so that is a logic error in the calculation.

Note fans controlled by HW monitors do stop and start if the CPU temps are low enough to not need the fan. And your temps don't indicate a heat problem.

When the fan is stopping and starting, how long does it run before stopping again?

You MUST determine where the clicking sound is coming from because clicking sounds are often due to a failing hard drive. So stick your head inside the open case and see if you can pinpoint the sound.

All so agree on the clicking sound that might be a hard drive failing as well.

Run a chkdsk on your hard drive to see if that will cure the clicking sound if not then unplug the hard drive that is making noise then plug it back in to see if that stops making noise.

Some times the cables comes lose.

Cable coming loose to a hard drive wouldn't cause a clicking sound.

Agreed. A drive clicking is usually the R/W head banging against its stop (the extreme inner or outer limits of its travel path. It could be seeking missing file location data, indicating a corrupt tables (normally repairable), or it could indicate a logic fault with the drive itself (often not repairable).

Also, if you suspect its the hard drive, running a full chkdsk on that disk could be the thing to kill the disk, so i really wouldn't recommend that either.

the fan itself is not spinning that fast, it looks pretty much the same speed as the other fans. And its not really a clicking noise..almost like that noise the predator makes in the movies..lol. It only makes that noise when the fan stops then starts up again. The fan stops at different times...its never the same, never noticed it this morning yet. Also i noticed when looking at the fan itself, it would slow down then speed up.

I do have a software that controls fan speed. I use AI suitses 2 - Fan Xpert... i'll show it on the third picture.

Here's a pic of what the fan looks like, it's the bottom fan.

Well, you don't have to run the ASUS fan program. The BIOS itself typically manages CPU fans well without having to load yet another program with Windows.

It does i have seen it done on mine if you bump it a lot with your leg like me.

Like i said them Auto controlling software can do more harm then good the only real program you should use is the MSI afterburner just for your video cards Fan all others should be left alone.

And that Fan Xpert seems to be buggy i would remove it.

I all so agree with Digerati The BIOS itself manages CPU fans well if setup right.

I checked and the sound is coming from the fan.

When I went into the bios menu i noticed that the fan didn't stop or slow down, stayed around 3000rpm. then restarted and the fan is still stopping then starting again. Here's a 20sec video of the fan stopping and making that noise.

If it is just that fan then i would replace it to see if the new one does the same thing.

That is a strange noise. Are you sure the blades are not scraping anything - like wires?

Again, your temps are fine, so not sure I would be too concerned but I would still uninstall that ASUS controller and use just the BIOS/Motherboard fan control. If the fan does that stop and go thing there, then I might try a different fan.
