Change Computer Or Just Update Win 8.1

My wife and I have the same computers and both operate under Win 8.1 pro. We seem to be getting more and more unexplained errors or blue screens as time goes by. We do NOT do games. She is an author and I do genealogy so she does a lot of research and then writes, I do a lot of research and then DB.

My question searching for advice is which would be better for us. Simply upgrade to Win 10 with no transfering of files and data or upgrade both the hardware and OS with the problem of transfering all the files and data? Our current computers are fully capable of running Win 10.

Besides "the mechanic" request, it would be useful to check in event viewer, to see any critical, or, other errors
You can do this by right clicking computer, click manage, click event viewer, and then click on the error, and upload the picture of it to us.
It may just be a faulty driver, or, a an update error we may be able to help with.
As it is on both, I would initially do this anyway.

 

Whether you choose to upgrade or get new systems you need to ensure you first have up to date backups of your personal data and know how to restore them. Never just assume that your data will be safe, either through a system change/upgrade or just in daily use. Everyone needs a backup plan and needs to follow it.

Don't wish to lecture but this is just so important. It's no good bemoaning you haven't done it after the event.
