Currently using Crazy Browser which needs IE to run.

If I switch to Firefox or Chrome, what happens to the Favourites I have listed? Do I lose them? If so, is there a way I can store them somewhere?

Both Chrome and Firefox will try to import your IE favs during setup. Not sure how they would handle Crazy though.

    A million thanks!

IE lists the same Favourites as Crazy. Now all I have to do is choose which browser to get. I've read the forum here and it seems both have problems. But it could be that the people who complain are as technically dumb as I am.

    Cheers!

Anyway, you've nothing to lose by seeing how it goes - you can always uninstall a browser. I keep IE, Chrome and FF on all my systems. One of 'em will usually sort any problem the others have ;)

Now you need at least a billion thanks.

I didn't know I could do that. Brilliant!

Okay, downloaded Chrome and it imported Favourites from IE. I can't believe how slow that browser is and how it insists on using US English so I have to "edit" emails. This is ridiculous. If I see that revolving circle much longer, I will go blind.

Just downloaded FF 5 from MG. (Only safe place in my opinion.) It will not save Favourites even though I've tried several times to copy them from IE, which is still on my computer. (It wouldn't allow me to register with a site that sent me the link.) I'm the boss, FGS! I won't have a program tell me what to do about safe places I want to sign with. Just as well I remembered the name of this site.

What now? I can't put up with the slowness of Chrome but I want my Favourites back. Is my only option to keep IE and boot FF and Chrome off my computer?

Try this in Chrome and see if that solves the problem. Got the quote by googling.
As for Firefox, while installing it, it should have asked you if you wanted to import the Favorites from IE into Firefox. Here's a nifty little free program (Transmute) that lets you to migrate your IE Favorites and numerous others into many browsers, including Firefox. Choose the source (IE) and then click on Firefox 3+ or jason. (Don't remember which one). You can try and see which one works. Get the free one which is Transmute STANDARD. http://www.gettransmute.com/products/
If the above doesn't work out for you, then someone else here may be able to help you out.

    Or try this way:

Open Firefox v5 -> File -> Import -> click MS Internet Explore -> Next -> tick Favourites -> Next -> Finish.

Then click on the Bookmarks button on the Firefox Menu bar and you favs should be in the drop down, probably all in one folder which may need organising. Click Show all Bookmarks and then by opening the IE folder in the list, you can drag them into the main Bookmarks list.

    Thanks. It's JSON.

Yes, I have it on UK English but it insists on using US on emails. Chrome has a problem with UK English being used in Canada.

Firefox - I've tried nearly everything, including what was advised here. When I told it I wanted UK English, it uploaded both the UK and US versions. I don't need that much taken up by virtually duplicate programs. Firefox doesn't seem to understand that I'm in Canada and do NOT want the US version.

As far as I'm concerned both browsers are trash and they're out of here. I'll stick with IE and keep deleting the 9 version upload.

Thanks to you both for your help.

Here is the British UK download page for Firefox. http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/ The top one is the one you would need. Firefox and Chrome are excellent browsers but do understand if you prefer IE. Firefox and Chrome browsers though shouldn't be as slow as you are describing.

If you change your mind and want to try Firefox again, just uninstall you current Firefox from Add/Remove. After that install the British version.

Thanks Oma. I did try to change FF to UK English but it insisted on downloading the US as well. Something like 15,000 whatever for each. I don't need to get clogged up with that sort of prank.

Both are far too slow, Chrome is painfully so. I don't entirely trust IE but I need it to run Crazy Browser. I guess I'm used to CB and its direct approach - no fancy bells and whistles or offerings of things I'm not interested in. I use the computer for business as well as pleasure and I need the speed to get to where I want to go without delay.

    Thanks again.

I guess I'm not the only one who's a bit mystified by all this, as both Chrome and Firefox are massively popular, highly capable and very fast browsers. Your speed problems though could be down to your comp being a bit low on resources. Which OS are you using, and what RAM does it have?

Firefox offers to import your IE Favs during setup and, as Oma says, dumps them into a single folder called, I believe, as I've long since reorganised it, 'From Internet Explorer'. Does that folder not exist?

The Chrome language issue in emails might be addressable depending on what email service you are using. It's clearly a webmail service rather than a POP or IMAP email client or Chrome wouldn't be involved at all, but is this Gmail we are talking about, or Hotmail perhaps, or your ISP's email service?

Finally, you refer to 'deleting the 9 version upload'. Is there some reason you don't want IE9? It's a massive improvement over IE8.

    Running Vista and Word 2010

This what Belarc says I have available:
500.06 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
396.54 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

I use Gmail, and IE 9 screws up the page. When I dropped back to IE 8, as a Gmail forum moderator advised, it worked fine. It didn't affect my ISP service. If IE 9 eventually downloads itself again, and Gmail works fine, I'll allow the update to stay. (Yes, I have "choose which updates to install" activated but, somehow, IE 9 keeps creeeping in.)

Yes, the Favourites folder showed up in FF as you describe - but two extra steps to get to where I want to go is not on. That isn't improving speed. And what if I delete IE from my computer? Chrome did a better job of showing Favourites but it took a while to get one open. In both of those browsers there was a delay opening sites because they were so busy keeping a record of the sites I visited. I don't need a record kept. If I want to visit a site again, I will add it to my Favourites. Added time to do something I don't want slows down my Internet connection speed.

I guess FF's and Chrome's speeds are acceptable to those who have never tried smaller programs like Crazy Browser. It's direct, fast, and doesn't offer me things I have never and will never use or need.

Many thanks for your help and suggestions. I appreciated it.

It seems unlikely to me that saving browsing History would slow web browsing.
However, in Firefox you can adjust the History settings or turn it Off.
From the menu bar, choose Tools > Options > Privacy.

K-Meleon is a smaller browser based on the Gecko engine, like Firefox. It's not as flexible in terms of configuration options, but it is stable and Fast.

SpeedGuide.net: TCP Optimizer can improve browsing speed by adjusting system settings.
A backup of current settings is made before changes are made and can be restored.

Hard disk capacity isn't the issue here Lavender, but it could be your installed random access memory (RAM) that may be slowing Chrome and Firefox down. If you look in Belarc for Memory Modules, and if it says 1024 megabytes or less, then you will not be able to run either Firefox or Chrome satisfactorily, as Vista really needs twice that amount of RAM (2GB) to run well. Your comp is not being slowed, as you believe, by the browsers keeping records of sites visited as that is completely insignificant. Providing Vista has sufficient RAM available then both Chrome and Firefox will perform completely satisfactorily but if you are low on RAM then Crazy may indeed be the better option.

The Firefox Favorites issue can be simply resolved by cutting and pasting, or dragging and dropping your IE favorites into whatever folders you would like them in. This only has to be done the once. Oh, and btw it is not possible to uninstall IE from Windows.

What can I tell you? That was my experience with Chrome and FF.

I'll take a look at the other browsers. Thanks for the links.

    How much RAM you have?

  18. Lavender

    Lavender Master Sergeant

Belarc says I have - 1982 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

From your post, it seems I don't have enough to run the other browsers. That's okay, I've used Crazy for as long as I can remember, it was IE I was unsure about. I might not be able to uninstall it but I can prevent it from upgrading to 9 until 9 is stable.

All I can tell you is that the fuss and bother with Chrome and FF doesn't make it worth switching. I'm not any sort of geek and having only certain things run in either browser makes me nervous. I'll stick with the tried and true for now.

    Thanks for your help.

Does K-Meleon need FF or Chrome installed before I can run it? Crazy Browser has to have IE installed.

    No. It is self supporting.

Normally 1982MB should be plenty, but it depends very much on what else is running at the same time. But if Crazy is working well for you .... ;)

I would still advocate keeping FF on your system though. You have oodles of free disk space, and it won't hamper anything else just by being there. All browsers hit the occasional website problem, and having an alternative available is often an easy workaround.

Thanks. I'll investigate K-Meleon because I don't want to have two large browsers on my computer.

As you say, it's a good idea to have a spare.

Why? You have oodles of free drive space. Having two "large" browsers will do no harm whatsoever to your computer. In fact, it should be clear by now, based on posts in this thread, that a good many of us actually more than two large browsers installed. On my laptop running Windows Vista (2GB of RAM), I have IE9, Firefox, and Chrome. On my Windows 7 tower system, I have IE9, Firefox, and Opera. And, none of these browsers run sluggish, as you say Chrome and Firefox do on your computer.

As I said - I don't want two large browsers on my computer. I may well have the space, but I don't want them.

My experience with both those browsers may be different from what others experience. For me - they're far too slow and I won't touch them.

I am using Pale moon which is a clone of Firefox but faster and it allows all FF add ons.

Thanks, Bill. That also looks interesting.

I notice it mentions FF a fair bit on the site, does that mean I have to have FF for it to run?

There are a couple of add-ons that FF has that I would like, but not enough to put up with the whole FF thing.
