in ie, act like you are going to select the link from your favorites, but right click "properties" instead, then change the icon (screenshot below). you might want to do search for the one you want 1st, so you know where to browse to. g/l, sos

kojack22, I see you're using IE 7. I don't know why, but IE 7 retains some favicons, which is what you're talking about, without having to do what sosaman said. So, IE 7 seems to have a better memory, in this sense, than IE 6. At least, that' been my experience with IE 7. Have you noticed it retaining any favicons or do they all disappear and get replaced by the generic icon once you close IE and open it in a subsequent session?

Edit: sosaman's technique will do the trick. I've used it many times with IE 6. However, he left out one step. Assuming you want to capture the official favicon used by the website, you need to grab it and save it to your hard drive, and then follow sosaman's procedure. Let's use Google as an example. You'd need to go to http://www.google.com/favicon.ico and save that image. Likewise, for other sites, you'll need to go to the home page + /favicon.ico to find their favicon and save it. Bit of a nuisance, isn't it?

DOH, i thought it was saved in there. however after reading your reply, i went and checked it myself. thx, usaveteteran

kojack22, make sure where ever you save it to, is gonna be it's final resting place (so to speak). i saved it like usavet said, and it worked. however, when i deleted the icon (which i saved to my desktop), it broke the path (were it was pointing to), so the icon pic went back to the default. - sos

I created a folder called favicons; that's where I save them. You might make it a sub-folder of My Pictures; doesn't really matter where you put the folder.
