Changing Pw Win 7

How do I change pw for Win 7?
Got new computer, PW was automatically entered on old one, now forgotten.
Changed PW, system put me on a Mac site (I use a PC)
Now it does not like new PW, and I assume I cannot retrieve old PW.
Found myriad of instructions at net sites on resetting PW, none of which are not usable.
Why does MS insist on a pw that meets their idea of one, and since it seems if I want to change my PW it either meets MS specs, or no pw.
Buggin' the Hotel Echo double hockey stick out of me.
