character encoding?

    Hi,
    I'm working on building my first website so I don't know a whole lot about html.
    Im using a free html editor called Nvu.When I go to validate my page it comes up with an error saying that I there was no character encoding found.Now,I know the very basics about html but Iv'e never heard of character encoding nor how to integrate it into my webpage. I tryed going to the help section they provided but that stuff is way over my head. So could you please let me know how put this character encoding into my site.

    Well I thought i had this fixed but apparentley I was wrong. I have tried every Doctype header and ran the validator and still it comes up saying "This is not valid 4.01 transitional" or it says doctype not recognized.At this point Im pulling my hair out, I'm trying to move my page from the yahoo server to a better server w/ more space and I only have 20 days to do it or they kick me off there server.And the page must have "0" errors.
    I tried rewriting my page using Microsoft frontpage 2002 thinking it would automatically set the doctype,but it doesn't.I'm not using any frames,it's a pretty basic site.
    Please Help,

    You should take some time to learn about tables. If you want to maintain valid html, then don't use Front Page. Front Page uses proprietary MS code that only works with IE and doesn't validate.
