Does charging the laptop while it is in use damage the battery or the laptop itself?

That is a good question ;) ... mine is always plugged in.... perhaps in the older versions of laptop, but now with the newer version perhaps it doesn't matter.
My laptop [Compaq Pressario] has been pluggled in for three years, it still works fine here so far..... best laptop I ever bought. :)

    Now I'm intrigued....:confused

Hope you get the answer to your question :)

No or I'd have three damaged laptops. It just takes longer to charge while you are using it, I suspect.
