chaslang help please

    im sending this message in safe mode off my pc, everytime it boots up it shuts down, do you reckon its a virus? my avast detected a virus this morning and i put it in the chest. what steps should i take, i rand spybot, spyblaster and adaware yesterday with the latest updates.

    Does it only shut down when booting in normal mode? But not when in safe mode?
    Have you run a full virusscan on your system and are virus definitions up to date?

    yes its only shutting down in normal mode not safe mode, ive run spybot, adaware and now im running avast all with the latest updates in safe mode, cos pc wont stay on in normal mode.

    Does it boot all the way up into Windows and shutdown sometime later? Or does it not even complete boot?

    it goes all the way, it boots up normally to my desktop then shuts down

    What OS?
    Can you log in as a different user and not have a problem?
    What kind of connection to the Internet do you have (dial-up or permanent like Cable or ADSL)?

    OS is xp
    dont have any other log on accounts on pc
    using cable internet connection

    ive just tried to start up again in normal mode after running, adaware, spybot and avast but its still the same.

    So you only have the Administrator account? There are no Guest or other accounts? Are you sure?

    Do you have desktop set to display a web page?

    Try booting up without your Cable connection (i.e., unplug the physical cable). If that works, insert the cable and see what happens.

    Well I'll be darned! ive just restarted pc in normal mode to see if i could switch on the guest account and its working again....strange or wot! Thanx for the help, and im awfully sorry if you feel that i have wasted your time. lets hope it stays workin :)
