it's been many years since i worked with the Aussies and had forgotten some of your wonderfully coloured descriptions of everyday things it was a real blast from the past thanks.

Is also commonly said in the UK when everyone is toasting with a drink - "cheers" - everyone puts their glass in which results in a "clink" sort of sound lol.

 

I often use the word Cheers when ending a post - it is a friendly way of saying thanks It is only used in an informal way, not the sort of thing you would end a formal letter with!
The other uses of Cheers are commonly when toasting drinks together :drink
and when saying goodbye to friends :wave CHEERS!!
