Well this is not a thread for what is your favorite browser or whats good or bad, but more as a heads up for users in the EU who will from March 1st be getting an update from Microsoft as part of the EU ruling on Microsoft bundling Internet Explorer with Windows.

This update will run on your PC and open a screen giving you the choice of choosing which browser you would like to use. There will be 12 options and the main five will be listed on the screen on random order (see image below). To be honest this is going to be confusing for many novice users, who will not know what to do or choose.

This will affect users of XP, Vista and Windows 7

Yes it will be confusing for the novice.
What does he mean by forced- the confused will ignore or hide the update if they can. A lot of people, specially novice users are unwilling to look beyond the default setup and hate any changes made on their PC :-D

    Hi Sikvik

I think what he means is that as the majority have auto updates on, then they will get this new option. Yes, most like what they are comfortable with like why many stick with XP, they will just click IE again.

Still dont get all the fuss as savvy users in the main will pick their own browser anyway and will have done so already, most also use multiple browsers, I have 4 installed to play with and keep current.

Also why is google not forced to offer the same list of browsers on its search page? as today on UK and EU pages of their search portal they are pimping their own Chrome! they are market leader in search just as Microsoft is in operating systems, so can be seen to be anti-competitive.

What? No Comodo Dragon browser to choose from? Comodo is taking over the internet faster than Google! :-D

They should have a Secunia "security breach" count under each one listed, might help uninformed people make a decision.

It doesn't say anywhere that IE won't already be installed on the machine, so what does it matter?

Indeed Laura, its just to pacify the EU and as they ditched a E version of Windows 7 and shipped the same version to everyone (the E version was for Europe and came without IE installed by default and was to give you that ballot choice screen thats now going to come with the update) with IE already installed, good marketing ploy as most novice pc users will stick with IE, fearing change.

Does it get us or the end user anywhere, well NO but it makes the EU commision all warm and fuzzy, that they won against the all powerful and evil Microsoft.

    :-D

The fuss is that by bundling the IE with the OS and automatically making it the default browser, they are in practice taking the opportunity to choose browsers away from the novice users. At least that's what the EU supreme court said, and by extension, that means they ruled that Microsoft is violating anti-competition laws and using what is more or less a monopoly on OS'es to create an advantage for themselves on the browser market.

And I agree that it's inconsistent. For one, the EU supreme court should now be moving on to smack Apple for doing the exact same thing in their OS. Do it to everyone, or not at all.

Missed out on alot of info i guess. I thought the biggest issue was that IE was integrated into Windows and therefore could not uninstall it, which I thought was ended after IE7? If it's not integrated, then it could be removed completly.

In my opinion, the court failed. If you had to PAY for a browser, then yes, it's a monopoly. But free downloads cannot be considered a monopoly.

Have a look at the top of the provided screenshots. What is displaying the ballot page? Yes, you guessed it, Internet Exploder.
