    Hi All

My cousin bought a nice spec PC off somebody cos they said they didn't need it anymore and then he asked me to install his supplied Nero disc on it so that he could use a new external DVD writer that he'd bought - big mistake for me!

The machine is a WinXP Home HP PC and was running like a pig, even though it doesn't have much on, P4 2.4GHz proc, 800MB-ish, etc. On closer inspection I found that Google pages didn't go where I wanted them to go, pop-ups relating to Antispywaremaster keep coming up, couldn't get to Task Manager or RegEdit and so on.

My usual tactic is download Kaspersky's trial, get the latest pattern file, boot up in safe mode, scan/fix and everything's rosy - however!

Couldn't install kaspersky 7 trial at all wouldn't run up after install. When I did manage to jump start it, couldn't get the update file even though I could get out onto the Internet OK. Scanned with the supplied pattern file, which found about 9 issues but was still getting all the grief.

Ran the standard regedit/task manager reg files off the net to get the access back.

Uninstalled Kaspersky, install AVG 8 - still had the same problems, couldn't get the latest pattern files so only picking up the 'child' crap not the mother.

Uninstalled AVG 8, re-installed Kaspersky, downloaded the latest pattern file on another machine and did a local/manual update to get it up to 29-5-08. Ran the scan in safe mode and it keeps finding 6 x clb related files, but can't get rid of them. Keeps saying failed to delete on reboot. I can't disinfect, delete or quarentine any of them.

I've found loads of little tools on the net such as combofix, smit, flash disinfector, etc, but when I double-click to run them nothing happens they don't run. I even tried the drag and drop script method onto combofix, but nothing. Weird thing is I can run other av/as apps such as HijackThis, but there is nothing in this to help me. It seems like every app that can do the business is blocked from doing the job.

I've tried to go into regedit to see if I can do anything manually, but all I get is 'the application has failed to start because clb.dll was not found'.

I tried the sfc /scannow option to try and fix this, but when it asks for a Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD (can't understand why it says Pro when it is Home) I put my XP Pro SP2 CD in, but it says that this is an incorrect CD.

    Hellllllllllllllllllllppppppppppppppp!!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

See if you can download and use the clb.dll from the below link:

    http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll-files_new.php/dllfiles/C/clb.dll/5.1.2600.0/download.html

Save it to your system32 folder.

Now please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions. If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
