I am at the end of my wits. I have followed your instructions exactly to rid my computer of a lop.com infection (big blue tool bar at bottom of desktop) and it was all clear. Still when I reboot computer out of safe mode and log into my daughter's account (it only has infected her account for some reason) and run hijack this, it shows back up as an RO register (i think) and when I open Internet Explorer, it is back again. I am attaching my latest HJT file in hopes you can find a way to help me. I am out of ideas. Here is the line I am sure is causing the trouble.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.gxnfaisudysgr.com/LGsiAbG3i2vFY5yj3Iyp5WJ/xG8sErlKdRXguyrIm0QgK_juYThR9XVzBgGXRSU9.php

By the way, directly below this on is the actual "home" page I have the browser set for, that being cnn.com. I have changed it three times just in case to cnn.com to msn.com then back to cnn.com.

Thank you very much for any assistance.

Is that your complete HJT log? It appears to be missing lines after the O16 section. There must be some services running. Please remember that HJT logs should only be posted when they are requested.

Did you install this Modem Spy program? You should go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall it. See: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/spyware.modemspy.html

Just in case the uninstall does not work, I'm leaving steps in the below to manually remove Modem Spy. So if the above works, you will not see the below items for Modem Spy.

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools Section" button on the open page. Then select "Open process manager" on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click "Kill process". Then click yes.
    C:\Program Files\Modem Spy\modemspy.exe

After killing all the above processes, click "Back".
Then please click "Scan" and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.gxnfaisudysgr.com/LGsiAbG3i2vFY5yj3Iyp5WJ/xG8sErlKdRXguyrIm0QgK_juYThR9XVzBgGXRSU9.php
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [modemspy] "C:\Program Files\Modem Spy\modemspy.exe" /tray
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [modemspy] "C:\Program Files\Modem Spy\modemspy.exe" /tray
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [hold rect eggs time] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\View phone hold rect\NurbHelp.exe
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Uninstall BitDefender Online Scanner v8 - {85d1f590-48f4-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} - %windir%\bdoscandel.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\IEExtension.dll
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\IEExtension.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\Program Files\Modem Spy <--- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\PartyPoker <--- the whole folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\View phone hold rect <--- the whole folder

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

That seems to have done the trick. I didn't delete the Party Poker program because that is a legitimate commercial site where I play texas holdem on line and have for about 3 years. Besides this was something my daughter did to her account that had not infected my XP account.. yet. I did delete modem spy even though that is a commercial program as well but since it is such an awful program, I got rid of it anyway.

I don't know for sure but I am guessing your instruction to reset the IE using the control panel (or IE icon) is what did the trick. That is not a step included in the "do this first" instructions but since this only came back whenever I booted up IE, it would make sense. Either way, thanks for the help. I have attached the updated log as you requested.

Just be aware that many of these online Casino sites do put junk on your PC and quite often can be the cause of popups.

It was not the Reset of Web Settings that fixed your problem. That was just an additional cleanup measure. Having HJT fix the below two lines was the key:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.gxnfaisudysgr.com/LGsiAb...XVzBgGXRSU9.php
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [hold rect eggs time] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\View phone hold rect\NurbHelp.exe

Your log is now clean. To help keep it that way, you should follow the steps in the below link:
