Clean Install

I want to install Windows XP on my machine on my existing drive, but I already have Windows 98 on it. I want to get rid of windows 98 so I guess I need to do a clean install. But how do I delete windows 98? Does formatting delete windows 98 or do I have to delete it some other way and how? I do not want to install windows xp over windows 98, thanks.

 

If you have the full version of XP ( not the upgrade ) then you shouldn't have any problems. Just put the CD in, reboot, and follow the on screen prompts. Choose the same partition that Win98 is installed on, format in NTFS as most prefer it ( full not quick ), and XP should do the rest for you.

A clean install can be done with the upgrade version of XP if you format the drive first and have the Win98 CD ( it will ask for proof of a qualifying OS to upgrade from). Same procedure as above, after formatting. Just insert the CD, reboot, have the Win98 CD handy, and follow the on screen prompts.

But as you state in your first paragraph, does that erase win 98 thats what i am asking how is that erased, and what does that?

 

Yes, formatting will erase Win98.

if you have extended or logical partitions on your win98 install you might need to erase them usind fdisk.
