I did a clean install of xp pro on a friends computer. Everything is perfect now (her computer was a big huge mess, lots of malware and viruses) except, I can see Local Area Connection is working properly, but can't get on the internet and don't have a clue why..can someone help me?

Hi Bev, I think you probably need to set the LAN connection to point at the gateway (router?), also check the DNS is set for the same address.

I am not sure how to do either of those things....can you help?

Sure Bev - It's difficult to gauge how much people know about PC's ... ;)

Control Panel > Networking > Local Area Connection - right-click it and choose Status, then click details - now press the PrintScreen key, this will save an image of your Desktop to the Clipboard, see my attachment.

Open MSPaint and paste in (Ctrl+V) the image, crop it and save as a .jpeg and attach it to your reply :)

NB., yours will look a little different to mine, different version of Windows is all ;)

Okay I did as you said and the attachment manager is saying that the file is too large? Sorry for being so dumb. I was up all night at this and I'm beat!

No worries Bev, if it's cropped to the same as my example and saved as a .jpeg, it should be small enough to attach, just open it up in Paint and trim it a little or save as .jpeg?

I am sorry about the length of time, but I needed a tea break, I was getting square eyes....Then the damned Paint Ap in the messed up computer didn't have the crop command so I had to unhook the internet cable and hook up to the other computer to find out how to crop them, then unhook and well, you get the idea...ahhhh

    Here they are:

Welcome back Bev ;), don't worry about how long it takes - you got it right = very important (and you used a workaround, too :))

But, bad news (I'm guessing you know this if you compared my example attachment to your own), your machine is not connected to anything :(, your LAN is sending data but is not receiving any in return, nor is it being given an IP address by your router (that's an assumption - do you have a router there?).

Ok, if you do have a router, is there another PC/computer connected to it? If so, we need the default gateway address for it, like there should be in your second attachment. If you can track that down, we may be in with a chance of you getting some sleep tonight ^^.

Tell me, how is the connection made, router/ADSL or cable - if cable, who is the supplier?.

I have no router, and I have cable internet and the isp is cogeco. I noticed when I did the same thing on my computer (this one), that there was a lot of other stuff numbers etc, so I'll do the same with this and we'll see okay?

Ok, try rebooting the non-connecting PC while it is attached to cable, it may pickup an IP address ... I'm gonna look for inspiration via Google ;)

Well no such luck buddy....That would have been too easy. Actually did that about 25-30 times last night...Any other news?

'Fraid not, only that Cogeco say it's just a case of connect and surf ...

Let's drop back and test the problem PC a little, use Everest to run a scan, zip the resulting scan log(s) and attach them to your reply please?

Here's the Everest Report. Hope it helps us....Damn this is so frustrating!

Didn't help much, I'm afraid - nothing obviously wrong there. Link to what should be the latest Intel drivers for the network card.

Back another step, you said this was a clean install, not a repair? You formatted it before reloading?

Ok, go back to the Network Status screen (your first attachment), click Properties, highlight 'Internet Protocol Version 4' > Properties > Advanced > default Gateway, Add .. and type in 24.235.208.1. Switch to the WINS tab and check 'Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP'. OK your way back out of those boxes and reboot - test and report back

Nope! Didn't work, but I will not quit and hope you won't either....lol I have made it a point to tell myself to go to bed tonight though..I just discovered that the disk I used only has sp1. Does that make a difference. I also have one with sp2 and would start all over with a clean install again if I have to.

SP1 on a machine of that spec should be ok - but SP2 has to be better ;)

I'm gonna get some sleep now, I'll look in tomorrow, maybe there'll be other ideas by then, sleep well.

    Hey there,

Try and see if your network card has the right drivers via the control panel / device manager. If thats o.k check your cables.

All I do in XP Pro, is go to internet explorer settings in control panel, some where in there is a tab for Connections, I use a switch on a lan, so I just let I.E auto configure it for me takes about two minutes if that..dont know what your windows is, no time to read through all the posts ...sorry...;)

Anyways hope this helps point you in the right direction if nothing else is working...

I tried what necro61 said and no go. I did notice that when I went into phone and modem options in the control panel and clicked modems, there is no modem listed. Could that be the problem and if so how do I fix it?
    Bev

No modem needed in your case, Bev.

necro61 did trigger some recollections though :) I used to have more success with XP by NOT allowing it to automatically detect settings ... see my attachment and uncheck the box, reboot and test.
