Just did a clean reinstall of XP. i.e I formatted and partitioned c drive and then installed XP. (I backed up the c: drive to an external drive first)

I have original CDs for some software, but some CDs I have are only upgrade disks, not original install disks.

How do I re-associate the existing software programs (which are on the external drive) with the new XP when I can't do a complete reinstall?

You can't "reassociate" an installed program from one hard drive to another. A program needs to be installed on the new hard drive for it to work.
You perhaps should have cloned the hard drive old to new then all the programs would work.
