    Hi,

Laptop got infected with SpyGuard 2008 & the google redirect virus - sometime ago now...

I have Read & Run all the steps to Clean Windows XP and the logs are attached.

I now don't experience any issues in running applications but I cant connect to the Internect using IE in normal mode.

I can connect to the web in safe mode.

I appreciate all your help so far - an excellently documented guide to cleaning up an infected PC.

If you can help me fix this final issue I will be eternally grateful! :)

    Thx Tony

    Hello, tony heyworth

The below fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for issue(s) on this machine. Also, please do not install any other software while we are still working with you unless instructed. Once we have given you the all clean and final instructions you will be free to install what you want.

*Note! You currently have NO protection software installed on this machine!

An observation - Ad-Aware is becoming useless in detecting and removing malware...SAS & MBAM are far better tools.

    Step 1:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and proceed
    Step 2:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 3:
Now we need to use ComboFix to remove some malware.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 4:
    Run Ccleaner

    Step 5:
You used an outdated version of SUPERAntiSpyware!
Uninstall SAS > run CCleaner > download and update the latest version > then run it

    Step 6:
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Then attach the below logs to your next reply:
    • New SASlog.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • C:\combofix.txt

Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure and give a description of how things are working now!

    dr.moriarty,

First - sorry for the delay in running the fix - I've been away on business.

Second - thank you for all your support on fixing my PC: I can now connect to the Internet!

Attached are the logs as requested.

The only issue I had was this entry couldn't be found - probably because I removed the program? O2 - BHO: AskBar BHO - {201f27d4-3704-41d6-89c1-aa35e39143ed} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll

I have since installed a new antivirus - Avast! Home Edition or would recommend an alternative?
I'm installing a s/w firewall : ZoneAlarm Free instead of the Windows XP one.

Would you recommend using Mozilla Firefox instead of IE?

Thank you for checkingt that I'm finally clean.

    Regards and best wishes, Tony:cool

    You're welcome, Tony!

Sorry for the delay in replying - I just started a new job.

"I have since installed a new antivirus - Avast! Home Edition or would recommend an alternative?" These are my personal choices - AVAST! or Avira AntiVir Personal.

"Would you recommend using Mozilla Firefox instead of IE?" Definitely!

    * We have one last file to remove - using Windows Explorer, navigate to and delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\ovxvppoaeadpdmmsg.exe.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
