Hi! This is a great site and I appreciate the effort everyone takes to help each other. I don't have any personal problems with spyware but my friend does. He has 2 computers, 1 is a family computer with home edition SP2, and 2 is his personal computer with pro SP2. Both comps are serverly infected with viruses and spyware. Icons appear, pop-ups galore, computer acts slowly, ect.

I have followed the 4 steps on the sticky. I have also downloaded AVG free and Microsoft anitspyware. As well as HijackThis 1.991 or whatever the latest is. I just can't seem to get these computers clean and I haven't used HJT yet. Anyway what steps could I use to get these computers clean?

    Thanks,

    Scott

If you have followed all the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

and you still have a problem, follow the steps below. (Note: each user account should be cleaned).

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

Thanks for the response. I will have to make 2 posts for both logs. This first computer seems pretty clean now.

This second computer stills seems messed up. I have desktop icons, and a porn pop window appeared when I opened IE to get to this site.

You first computer has bot Norton Antivirus and AVG7 installed. You must use only one antivirus application. Pick one and uninstall the other.

If you do not use Viewpoint Manager (most people have no idea what it even it), uninstall it too using Add/Remove programs.

You should have HijackThis fix the below lines while no browsers are opened.
    O15 - Trusted Zone: www.mistyanderson.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.mistyanderson.com
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone (HKLM)
    O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150/183046c794553e4bfa04/netzip/RdxIE601.cab

No post a new HJT log for this PC.

    For your second log:

Consider uninstalling Viewpoint Manager on this PC too.

Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
On the page that opens, scroll down to System Startup Service or SvcProc ... right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'. When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the 'Start-up Type' to 'Disabled'. Press 'OK' until you get back to Windows.

Next, open up HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the "None of the above, just start the program" button at the bottom of the choices. At the lower right, click on the 'Config" button, and then the Misc tools' button ... select 'Delete an NT Service" ... copy/paste the following into the box that opens, and press "OK":
    SvcProc
    Now exit HJT

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SerchURL = http://www.vroomsearch.com
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.vroomsearch.com
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.vroomsearch.com
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{20EC3D2D-33C1-4C9D-BC37-C2D500688DA2} - (no file)
    O1 - Hosts: 64.91.255.87 www.dcsresearch.com
    O2 - BHO: ohb - {F0C08B30-BA30-4FEB-924B-2E250CF0697D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gwss.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qpgwsbh] c:\windows\system32\qpgwsbh.exe -start
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DR_S] C:\Program Files\DR_S\DR_S.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ClockSync] C:\PROGRA~1\CLOCKS~1\Sync.exe /q
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Begone] C:\freescan\freescan.exe -FastScan
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [rmqf] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\rmqf\rmqfm.exe
    O9 - Extra button: Ebates - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (file missing) (HKCU)
    O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\gwss.dll
    c:\windows\system32\qpgwsbh.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
    C:\Program Files\DR_S <-- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\CLOCKSync <-- the whole folder
    C:\freescan <-- the whole folder
    C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\rmqf <-- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker <-- the whole folder

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

Followed the steps for the first computer. Here is the new log. Before I ran HJT, I ran a Panda Scan and it found these:

    Adware:Adware/eZula - Windows Registry
    Adware:Adware/nCase - C:\WINDOWS\180solutions
    Spyware:Spyware/Searchcentrix - Windows Registry
    Possible Virus - C:\Program Files\GameSpy Arcade\fpupdate.exe
    Adware:Adware/PurityScan - C:\WINDOWS\system32\HKNTFS~1.EXE

I used the heuristic option to dectect unknown viruses and that is what the possible virus entry is.

The log for your first PC is clean. Did Panda fix what it found? If not, fix them manually?

  9. beer2337

    beer2337 Private E-2

Panda said no disinfected. I have not deleted the files manually yet but I will. 2 of the files say windows registry without a specific path so I hope I can find those. On the the second computer.

This 1 was trickier than the first. New log is attached. I ran into these problems trying to follow your instructions:

I did not find these lines in HJT
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qpgwsbh] c:\windows\system32\qpgwsbh.exe -start
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing)

However I did find this line
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iztmhexfjl] c:\windows\system32\iztmhexfjl.exe -start

so I deleted as if it was the other file.

When I went into safe mode I could not locate the following
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\gwss.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
    C:\Program Files\DR_S <-- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\CLOCKSync <-- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker <-- the whole folder

you asked me to remove qpgwsbh.exe which I did but I also removed iztmhexfjl.exe since I have a feeling they are closely related.

Panda scan found 8 spyware entries before these steps as well which I will try and delete manually

They are registry keys meaning you need to edit the registry to fix them. But first you need to know the full registry key.

The below are still in your log and they are what I asked you to fix but you said they did not appear:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qpgwsbh] c:\windows\system32\qpgwsbh.exe -start
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DR_S] C:\Program Files\DR_S\DR_S.exe

You must follow the previous steps (fix the lines in HJT, delete the files/folder in safe mode)! If they are in your log which means they do exist.

I tried again. Ran HJT and fixed those 2 lines. Rebooted in Safe Mode and could not find the files. Under program files I just don't see a folder called DR_S. I did a system search for DR_S and nothing was found. I could not locate the file qpgwsbh.exe either. I found these 3 files qpgwsbh.dat, qpgwsbh_nav.dat, and qpgwsbh_navps.dat. How is it that HJT can see these files and I can't?

    Please check these options:

    Right Click Start.
    Select Explorer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types option.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Apply.
    Click OK.

Were they all set as requested above?

    Delete these: qpgwsbh.dat, qpgwsbh_nav.dat, and qpgwsbh_navps.dat

All were set as requested above. I will delete those files and send a new HJT log in about 12 hours.

    thanks

Okay! Make sure you check for the items in message # 11 again.

Here is the new log for computer 2. There are a ton of .ico's in system32 that don't look like they belong but I don't know how harmful they really are. Oh and I didn't have any luck finding those files in #11, so hopefully they are just gone for good.

This last log is clean! Are you having any problems on this PC?

Thanks for all your time and effort Chaslang. Both computers seem clean and are working properly. Second computer is running a bit slower than I would have expected but I doubt it is spyware related anymore.
