Client / Server Software Development

What things should I be looking into and considering, to develop platform free Client-Server software.

I am considering the development of this software for redistribution to people who require communication technology, such as small businesses, groups, and independant game developers as well as indivuals looking to host their own chat rooms.

I will be writing the core of the software in C/C++ as its a good solid language which I know well, and is supported on both Windows, Linux and Mac. However I am not sure as to how I should approach such a project, considering I am only one person who will be working on this in the large amount of free time I have.

The closest you can get to true platform free is the web.

Sometimes what I do is talk to companies around town and I ask them "what is the hardest part of your job". They go into all of their background on that part of the job and then the questions spiral from there. After about an hour of shootin the poop I write down some ideas on paper and take some time to play with how I would write the software and what kind of helpful automation I can provide in the app.

The current facility I'm at still has rolodexes on their desk. I personally find that using paper to track anything is a waste. If you have paper that you put into a box and store it, then that information can be databased.

 

You provide too little information, how exactly do you plan to do this? How is it going to be used? Are you sure you understand the demands that making it cross-platform will demand? Since you're supporting Linux will you support other UNICOS Operating Systems (ie. Solaris, *BSD family, qnx, etc.)? etc.
