Clock changes/resets every hour

The time on my computer resets at half past the hour to whatever it was previously set at (ie. if i set the clock for 3:09, when the clock should go from 3:29 to 3:30, it will go to 3:09 instead).

I can only find a couple of posts online where people refer to this issue and none of them have been resolved. I have not exhausted my own troubleshooting capabilities, but find that as I get older, my stamina is not quite there, so I am asking the broad world of others experience to assist.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro M70 with a fresh (at the new year) XP Pro install from MFG disc.

Did the install behind a hardware firewall and installed all windows updates prior to doing anything else with the machine.

I currently have Trend Micro Client/Server Security Agent running, although this computer is not a member of the domain that the server is on and thus does not communicate or receive updates from the domain server, but does update from TM's servers and is currently up to date. Trend Micro did not find any viruses, nor did the Symantec online scan (which I realize does not mean alot, but it does mean something).

I have also asked an IT support guy if he had ever seen this and he had not ever seen this either.

    Anyone?... Anyone?... Bueller?

It sounds like you might have a time sync and when it can't find the server, it syncs with whatever time was on your computer.
    Try this http://www.worldtimeserver.com/atomic-clock/
and see if it keeps your clock in sync.

yes, I had thought of doing something like that (and, seriously, thanks for the reply and suggestion) but would rather fix the problem than have a workaround or have to install extra (I won't say unnecessary because it may end up being necessary) software.

This being a fairly fresh install, I may just end up rebuilding the machine again and hoping for the best.

I would, however, ideally fix the problem if anyone has ever seen this before or has ideas on what to do to fix it.

ok... new info that probably changes the heading this should be under.

The system clock appears to be dead. On another Toshiba laptop, I went into the BIOS settings to see what the clock was doing and it was running, meaning the seconds were ticking by. Then I went into the bios on the computer with the time problem, and it was sitting at the time I had set 30 minutes prior and the seconds were not ticking.

So my guess is that somehow Windows runs on a different (software?) clock that checks the system clock every once in a while.

We are now off to check the Toshiba site to see if there is anything we can do to jump-start it's heart.
