    Hi All,

I'm in the process of fixing my computer infected with malware. One of my user profile (Administrator account/Windows 7 pro, work station) is corrupted. The cmd function activated from start does not work. How can I solve this issue with this user profile? Thanks and will await for your assistance.

    Sincerely,
    Mongoosba:-o

    Greetings mongooseba.

    Quick questions:

    Please explain
    - do you get any error messages, does nothing at all happen, have you tried right-clicking the Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt and selecting "Run as Administrator"? Do you see any other symptoms that indicate that this is a corrupted profile?

    Hi Caliban,

At the Start/run box when I type "cmd", there would be a brief black box that appears then disappears almost immediately. This problem only occurs with a particular user's workstation.

The "Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt and selecting "Run as Administrator" resulted in the exact problem.

The command prompt works with another user on this workstation.

Thank you for your patience and look forward to your solution.

That pretty much says it all, doesn't it? I imagine that the safest/simplest route would be to create a new profile for that user and to transfer data from the existing profile to the new one. Once everything's kosher there just get rid of the old corrupted profile. For reference: Fix a Corrupted User Profile.

    Hi Caliban

Thanks for the speedy reply. This particular user ID on other workstations work well with the CMD.exe file. It is only localized to a single workstation that I am having issues with. Should I still create a new profile? Look forward to your reply.

I would, especially if other users have no problems on that same computer. User profiles are specific to a machine's native operating system - as far as I know profiles don't roam from workstation to workstation.

    Hi Caliban,

Good. Tried the intructions but am somewhat stuck b/c the intructions were unclear. I'm on a domain workstation, so do I create the new user profile on the affected user login or another?

    Thanks.

    Hi Caliban,

Yes, you are correct that the user profile can be deleted locally. So I removed it off from the regedit directory, rebooted, and logged on as the affected user profile. It recreated it back again.

CMD.exe worked and you are correct that it was the corrupted profile. Thanks so much for all your assistance.

    I'm happy now.

    Cheers.

    Much appreciated,

Log in as an Administrator (but not as the owner of the corrupted profile) and create a new user from that account.
