    I have a problem with my command promt.
    The problem is when I type any command such as: ipconfig, a command to findout my IP address and other things.

    Well... this is the problem. Whenever I type any command in CMD, it will always reply me with:

    ' ipconfig ' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
    operable program or batch file.

    *replacing ipconfig with any other command I type*

    I thought it'd be a virus or spyware, so I tried Spybot-Search & destroy, Ad-aware, highjackThis, and Avast-Home. All of the scans came out clean.

    A solution to this problem will greatly be appreciated. Thank you

    Here what i found:

    As windows XP no longer leads you to directly edit autoexec.bat, (that,
    and also even if it did, regedit or sysedit no longer work when the
    command prompt and start|run no longer work), go to start | control
    panel | system | advanced | environmental variables and look at not
    only system variables, which are universal, but notice too the user
    specific variables and move any entries not preceded by "documents and
    and settings"

    My regedit and sysedit both work fine. I just can't get my cmd from
    start>run>cmd to work propertly.

    Ohh... and sorry, i did not understand the variables thing. I went to it, but the only thing that I found that involves cmd is in System variables.

    System Variables:
    Variable |Value

    ComSpec C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe

    NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS 1

    OS Windows_NT

    Path C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32;C:\WINDOWS;
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM;
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WSG32\

    PATHEXT .COM;.EXE;.BAT;.CMD;.VBS;.VBE;.JS;.JSE;
    .WSF;.WSH

    PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE x86

    PROCESSOR_INDENTIFIER x86 Family 6 Model 3 Stepping 1,
    AuthenticAMD

    PROCESSOR_LEVEL 6

    PROCESSOR_REVISION 0301

    TEMP C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

    TMP C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

    windir C:\WINDOWS

    This is listed for both variables in my account, variable TEMP and variable TMP.

    Ohh.. and i forgot to mention, i'm using Windows XP Pro, with SP1 only. I know... maybe i should update, but i can't afford giving my drive's space. Also because it slows down my computer, 900Mhz AMD Duron with 144MB. I know that my RAM is not a normal RAM number too -- this is a very old computer.

    Not sure if I read you correctly, but regedit and sysedit both work from Start-->Run in my XP Professional with Sp2 (and updates) OS. confused Bazza

    Yes, I've read it correctly and I did say they both work propertly. I go to start>run> and type in regedit or sysedit, both of them work.

    The problem is when i go to start>run>cmd> and type in any command such as ipconfig or netstat, the reply is always

    ' ipconfig ' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
    operable program or batch file.

    Replacing ipconfig with any other command i type in.

    Try this:
    Start-->Run
    cmd <enter>
    Type in cd\windows\system32 and <enter>
    Type in ipconfig and <enter>

    This should work. I just tried it now and it works for me. :D
    It should also work for any *.exe file in the System32 sub-folder;)

    OOHH!! Thank you very much, it worked!
    It worked after i typed:

    cd\windows\system32

    in it.

    Once again, thank you very much!

    Glad it works, but it should work from any line in the CMD, as long as the file resides in the system32 folder. Find the command prompt shortcut in the Start menu (start-->accessories-->command prompt), right-click it & choose properties. The "target" should be:

    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe

    Sounds like it was changed somehow.

    I didn't reply because I don't know an easy way to fix it. But I think his command path is wrong. In other words he has no problem actually starting cmd.exe but other programs like ipconfig which reside in system32. His path apparently does not include system32.

    My path looks like this:

    Path=C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\Business Contact Manager\IM;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\;C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\Business Contact Manager\

    My guess is SleepyChoco's path doesn't include the C:\WINDOWS\system32 part, but other than retyping his whole current path and adding system32 using the SET command, I'm not sure how to edit it. But it probably should be done or at least checked.

    *********
    If SleepyChoco is still reading you can see your path by opening cmd.exe window and typing SET. Just scroll down and find the PATH= line and check to see that it includes WINDOWS/system32

    cmd.exe is stored, by default, in C:\windows\system32, in my XP Pro at least, so if cmd works then the path should have included system32. confused Bazza

    Good point! Hadn't noticed that cmd.exe was in system32. I'm still unsure why he would have to be in system32 directory to execute various other commands. rolleyes
