First things to do whenever a Steam game crashes:

    1. Right-click the game in your Library, pick properties, and go to the local files tab and verify integrity of the game cache files.

    2. If it still crashes, make sure you know your login credentials, and shut down the client. Go to your Steam directory (in Windows 7 it defaults to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam) and delete the file ClientRegistry.blob Restart the client, and log in when prompted.

    3. If it still crashes, delete the local files (that's Steam-speak for "uninstall) and re-download and reinstall the game.

If it still crashes after you've tried all of the above, post back with system specs and more details on the error, and we'll do what we can to help you out. :)

    Hi Mimsy

Thanks for the super fast response –
Tried steps 1,2 and 3 and still the same.
    System specs below.
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz, 2637 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
OS Name Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB
Graphics Name NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295
Sound ASUS Xonar DG Audio Device

I’ve tried lots of different set ups in the nvidia settings and in the game settings as recommended by nvidia but I still get the same problem. Other games run fine but black ops freezes and windows reports a direct x problem. It mostly happens when the maps are changing and it has happened a couple of times as the voiceover says “enemy chopper in-bound” but this could just me looking for a pattern (as you do when these things are sending you crazy) .
I’ve tried with and without my antivirus running (super antispyware) and no apparent difference.
I’ve run DXDiag.exe and no problems are reported. Oh and I have all the latest patches.

Which DirectX do you have running? Win7 comes with Dx10 (and Dx11 if your video card can handle it), but your game was made for Dx9. 10 and 11 are supposed to be fully backwards compatible, but as with everything else computers, what should be happening and what actually happens aren't always the same. Try installing Dx9 from here and see if that makes a difference.

    Hi

running directx 11 when i tried to install from the link it said newer version and / or equivalent installed. I did see this in one of the gaming forums and it recommended running it from the COD disc which I did but still the same problem. :confused

Can't say I've seen the DX error but it wouldn't be totally out of this world to suggest it's the game itself.
Many people including myself have had a wide range of problems from low fps to CTD's to total lock ups and everything in between.
COD Black Ops is probably the most problematic game I've ever played and even after 4 patches it still doesn't run very well.

I'm not saying this is your problem but if all other games work fine I would reinstall CODBO and if it still does it but only with BO then I would put it down to the game itself.

But try a reinstall of the game and see if that helps.

    Hi
I’ve tried numerous things now and the map load out freezes have stopped but I get random ones now with this message below. I know it probably won’t help but just wanted to say thanks for the help so far.

    Hi

Do you have any other security apps apart form SuperAntiSpyware installed and if so uninstall then and SuperAntiSpyware to test, as Avira has for some had issues with this game.

The DirectX9 thats on the COD disk re-install it but this time right click its setup file and choose Run as Administrator.

Try updating your Nvidia drivers if not already.

Do you have Steam cloud and Steam in-game community enabled for the game? (Don't remember if it supports cloud or not.) If you do, disable both and see if that stops the crashing.

You know the only way we'll have of knowing for sure whether it worked or not is to test it very thoroughly. I'm afraid you will have no choice but to play several long Black Ops sessions over the next few days. It's the only way. ;)

I've had severe crashing issues in other games until I disabled the cloud and/or community, so I figured it was worth a shot. :)
