    hail

the best way to have no problems with codecs is to have a codec pack, right ? like nimo for example. is this true, are those packs good or are they evil ? they include the free version of divx... what if i want to encode ? should i install divx, isn't it bad to install divx professional if the free version is already installed ?

there are lots of codec packs and i had problems with nimo:

    - i know i should only instal the biscupic bla bla bla if i have video down\up problems... but the thing is that i have the problem with some, then after installing i remove the problem but other movies get down/up lol this means instaled or not instaled there are movies that play down\up.

    - i can't play 5.02 divx, i can't view xvid (all green screen)

(and i really want to see all codecs, like xvid last divx with no problems)

some website like doom9 say nimo is evil... they also have their own codec pack...

maybe someone that works with multimedia and that knows all those codecs and packs could say wich is the best choice.

    about software

to view i have, windows media player 9, realone 2 gold, quicktime 6.3 pro, irfanview with all the plug-ins and winamp 3. i think that with that i can view everything.

to edit and work with video, adobe premiere 7.0 does everything right ? i can use it to open .avi and .mpg and code it with divx or something ? http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=19494

    thanks

    farewell

My experience with codec packs is that they can seriously mess things up. I don't know if they just don't install things right or if it's a too-many-chefs-in-the-kitchen problem. If I get a movie and need a codec for it, I usually run GSpot, and then download the appropriate codec.

For viewing, I use guliverkli's Media Player Classic. Once you install RealOne and QuickTime, MPC will play them, so even proprietary codecs can be played by MPC. It also plays DVDs, although I haven't tried that myself yet.

I don't really edit. I know people who use VirtualDub and TMPEGEnc. As for Adobe, nobody I know can afford anything beyond Adobe's Acrobat Reader.

It shouldn't affect you system as a whole. You just might have weird behavior when watching movies, IMX. Like the output gets inverted, and random things like that.

I agree with da chicken, and that GSpot program rocks, never seen it. Thanks for the link.

It's not a good idea to install a codec pack, and that goes especially for Nimo.
Install the following codecs one after another: Divx3.11, 3.20, 4.12, ffdshow, AC3pack, then everything should work fine.

And I would never install RealOne.
    Yes, GSpot rocks.
