Okay, recently picked up a new coffee mill:

    http://www.cuisinart.com/catalog/product.php?product_id=306&item_id=415&cat_id=3

I love it, now there is no need for me to use the old coffee grinder, and wait for it to be grounded. Now, everything is automatic. :)

Also, I got a French Press from Bodum:

    http://www.bodumusa.com/shop/line.a...SLT=&mscssid=CQ7B5HG4JMUE8LCWPLSDSE89CQ8LCPKC

The 4 cup version. Might have to get a larger one in the future. From the taste alone, I may never use the old drip version again. :)

Now, I just need to start getting into roasting my own coffee. :)

Why a coffee grinder when I can buy my coffee straight from Starbucks :)

Would also love to be able to roast my own ....(wink ..) ..but have had to settle for some very fine preroasted in bulk ...starbucks is so over rated and priced..

What are you talking about, Starbucks is way better than cofee from McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts for that matter, and for the price of quality its worth it.

    Sounds good theefool!
Nothing like the smell of fresh coffee in the morning hey!

Maybe you could look at growing your own coffee beans, along with your tabacco and those mexican tomatoes....hehe!

When one buys the beans, then ye can choose, how fine or course, the beans get grinded. Course ground beens are excellent for French press. While medium (i believe) is excellent for drip, and fine for perculators.

Also, when one grinds the beans, themselves, the coffee is actually more aromatic, and tastes better.

Unfortunately, the wilder flavours, are often pregrounded.

I personally buy all types of beans, from different manufacturers. From Starbucks to Generic "Private Selection".

Currently, I have the following types of beans: Sumatra (from the Asia/Pacific), Serena Organic, my typical French Roast, and Cinnamon Hazlenut.

In the future, I'd love to try Kopi Luwak beans:

I have been the same way at times it seems it runs in phases with me,one moment grinding my own beans ect. is the greatest thing on earth the next I just wanna throw some instant in a cup and drink it,I'd really like a totally automatic machine like in a coffee house they are pretty expensive though

To me most important factor is bean freshness, then grinding fresh and making,I have kept beans in the fridge\ground fresh and it did help keep the freshness but not as good as freshly imported beans

Probably myth but I think that the transfer from the bean grinder to the filter lost alot of the aroma,if it were all within a sealed unit, ground then a second later hot water I think it would be awsome MHO:)

This is what I did in the past, then read (have to find the info and post it sometime) that freezing isn't the best for beans. Air tight container, is preferred.

Probably right, one thing I notice the coffee clumps more when refridgerated which is probably condensed moisture not good I imagine for the flavour, but bans left sealed seem to dry up no matter how much they are sealed:confused:

BTW I wouldnt know where to start getting hold of fresh raw beans for roasting,no doubt the internet will help;)

BTW thanks fool I think you'v decided what I'm getting my dad for christmas,if I do get him a machine I'll post it here for scrutiny;):)

EDIT wanna spend about $200 or less if you have any suggestions

What the French Press (human powered machine) or the Coffee mill?

  12. Rikky

Rikky Wile E. Coyote - One of a kind

The whole machine, grind and brew I'm not sure it can be done for $200,he has had a krupier "sp" machine a year ago which he bought ground vaccum sealed coffee for but he's gone back to instant over the past year, the machine only cost £50\$100 I was just wondering if I could get one that ground the beans and filtered then automatically,I doubt it as they are pretty expensive,he couldnt be bothered using a couple of devices like a press and mill,I know him:D

I'll have to do some shopping:)

Refrigerate yes, freeze no. I travel 90 minutes each way on the 401 expressway to buy my coffee, from an importer. I store the roasted beans in an airtight plastic container into which I've placed a paper towel. The paper towel controls the humidity in the container, so the beans don't decompose. My current bean is from Ethiopia, and goes by the regional name of Mocha Sidamo. If you've become tired of your current bean, try this one. It reminds me of the excellent beans we used to be able to get from Yemen. That was very good coffee, but sadly, most Yemeni beans are bought up by the big hotels and expensive restaurants these days. We get bombarded by adverts about Columbian coffee, as if it's anything special. Most of it is only good enough to go into instant coffee. I use the French press, as well, because you get ALL the coffee flavour. I seem to be at my best, just after my second cup. I've been known to drink as many as eight in a day, but for health reasons you really should not consume more than 3 or 4. :)

There was an excellent article in Scientific American about three years ago on the science of coffee, which dispels numerous myth’s about the Art/Science of good coffee. I will attempt to “Google” it a little later and see if I can find the link. For those that want the “Best Coffee” I have ever tasted I would suggest a visit to the Oso Negro site link http://www.osonegrocoffee.com/about/index.html , but a warning once you have tried their coffee you will be unable to drink another cup of Restaurant coffee, we usually get the “Low Acid Blend” but others are equally good. They go for about $15.00 CDN a pound, and are roasted and shipped the very same day.

Folgers classic roast and a little coffemate has always been great for me.
Starbucks is okay, but you can find better coffee at coffee shops.

i have not tried any of the exotic brands except of course the Hawaiian ones. out of those Kona is the best, although hamakua coffee is also yummy. strong, not bitter, slightly smoky, with a hint of something else vaguely reminiscent of chocolate. the aroma smells kinda sweet, and its irresistible. like the smell of fresh baked bread. when one drives through the farm lands of kona, the smell of roasting coffee, of vanillas, and mac nuts which are all grown and roasted in the same area mix with the scent of plumaria, gardenias, and jasmines that simply assaults the olfactory senses in the most delightful way. my cup runneth over.

Like Cochese I usually go with Folgers Classic. But when I make it for myself I put just a pinch of salt in the grounds - seems to take some of the bitterness out of it (I drink it black, of course).

laurieB, I have actually had some Kona! A friend of my wife's brought it back from vacation a while back. I really liked it.

I do love to be around freshly ground coffee - you can't beat the aroma.

Sigh - now I want some more coffee. I'm at work and my thermos has run dry . . . :(

Actually, I usually stop at the 'Downtown Smoke Shop' where I get a 22oz cup of Vermont coffe for $1 (Cool Beans Coffee) Very smooth, great taste and even as it cools, maintains the body and flavor that it has when hot. Can't say the same about $tarbuck$ coffee. But it is also a personal taste that comes into play with it too.

I just like regular freakin coffee...with a buch of french vanilla creamer, and some sugar...that's it!! And occasionally one of those cheap *** French Vanilla Cappucinos out of the machine at the gas station!!

I don't want a Mocha Latte Grande cappucino espresso...frozen...reheated...dash of cinnamon...shake it up...now let it settle...ok, blend it...squirt some whip cream...sprinkle with some nutmeg...blah, blah, blah...if you know what I mean!!!! LOL

But I guess some do like that!!

    *shrugs*

I go for mine espresso strength, normally, but always black and stong, no sugar... fav at present is Lavazza

Dunno on Starbucks, undecided against Costa Coffee, but McDs is harsh!!!!
