I have McAfee and it is stopping me from downloading Combofix - on the "XP Cleaning Procedure" page, it says this might be an issue, but not how to fix it.

I tried to restore the file in McAfee but it only restored "combofix.part.exe" and when I attempted to redownload the program, firefox could not access the website.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Sorry but your best bet is to uninstall McAfee since they do not have the ability to stop their program from interferring with valid processes from running. On the ComboFix instructions site they explain that you need to shutdown protection software to prevent problems. That is the fix. You could try temporarily stopping all McAfee startup process and services from loading using MSconfig and then rebooting and try to run ComboFix. Or you could try running ComboFix in safe boot mode. The other solution is to uninstall the problem software (McAfee) when they do not give you the ability to terminate their program.

I suggest that you also complain to them about why they are detecting valid malware removal tools as problems. If ComboFix and other tools used the same methods as McAfee, they would be deleting McAfee as a potentially unwanted or dangeous program.

Why are you trying to run ComboFix anyway? What malware problems are you having?

do you think microsoft firewall would protect me for the short time I need to download combofix and then restart McAfee?

I am not sure I have a malware problem, but my problems are thus (paraphrased from my topic in the software thread):
I get svchost.exe errors and Windows generic Host errors every time I start my computer; my internet connection will not stay on and it will either randomly stop or it will disconnect and then fail to reconnect (I either get "fail to register DNS" or "fail to obtain IP address" messages, even though I know the problem is not with the network).

So, I am not sure it is malware but I thought I would run through all the steps to eliminate it as a possibility.

    Thanks!

BTW - love the tag line

Maybe and maybe not. However, if you restart McAfee, you still will not be able to run ComboFix because McAfee will still get in the way. If McAfee was able to properly detect and remove malware then tools like ComboFix and many others would not need to exist. Too bad we have to say this but it is just a plain fact.

Based on what you have stated in your other thread, it does no really sound like malware but the only way to really know for sure is by checking. svchost errors can be cause for many reasons, most of which are not malware. And random problems with your DNS server are also unlikely to be malware. Malware would more likely cause a constant problem not a random one.

yeah, I signed up for a three-year subscription to McAfee about two and a half years ago when I didn't know any better. I got a really nasty virus last July that McAfee didn't even try to stop (and I'm still not convinced my computer is completely over it). But, I have been hesitant to switch cuz I don't want to pay for something else and I am afraid to use a free program (you usually get what you pay for). I know you guys recommend a few free ones, but if you were going to pick the best, what would it be?

Things change overtime. We used to prefer AVG but not anymore since their new program has too many false detections and is a resource hog. I would recommend trying either Avira or Avast and see how you like it. Only use one. You must uninstall, reboot and then install the other if you change your mind about the first one you choose. The free tools are quite good. I actually think they are better than paid programs like McAfee or Symantec.
