ComboFix wont install in Vista

    ComboFix balks after double-clicking cf.exe. Error says 'incompatible OS, runs only in NT and XP'.

    I have previously: read and followed 'Read First' and Malware FAQ', I downloaded Combofix to Desktop, changed name to cf.exe, disabled firewall and other scanners, and also tried running from Run.

    Is there a Vista version I should be using, or something more obvious I am missing?

    (My system: Vista SP1, Toshiba Satellite notebook on wireless home network).

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Why are you running the READ & RUN ME to begin with? That is what malware problems are you have? Please be specific. Note the part of the READ & RUN ME referring to ComboFix has changed to use the official instructions for ComboFix and does not ask you to rename it anymore. Did you just download ComboFix today or are you using an old version?

    Are you running a 64 bit version of Vista? If so, that is why ComboFix (and many other tools) will not work. In fact, many forms of malware do not appear on x64 since they cannot run there either.

    Hi-
    My problems include: Trojandownloader messages from AVG, "error AVG plugin loading 0xE0018E03", unable to load Advanced Settings in AVG after repeated AVG re-installs, and "opnmNFYO.dll and rewfvmjx.dll not found" messages on system reboot.

    My Vista version is 32-bit.

    I am not sure now, after reflecting on your message, whether ComboFix was recent or dated back to May 2008 (when I had an earlier problem on an XP machine). I have removed all copies of ComboFix and will try again.

    After running Super Antispyware, Spybot S&D, AntiMalware, and MGtools, I no longer have Trojan issues, but the dll and AVG problems remain.
