Hello everyone. I initially got to your website by searching for a problem I am having with my Trend Micro Internet Security software. When I try to scan a popup window tells me "This feature is still initializing. Wait a few moments and try again later."

Following previous posts, I began the cleaning process. I have run several of the programs I downloaded from your website. I am currently running Combofix as the next step. When I renamed it cf.exe, and then copied the provided text into "Start" and "Run", it told me I could not rename combofix to cf.exe. I renamed it cf1.exe and then modified the text provided and it started combofix.

My main question before I continue is probably a bit overly cautious. A popup has come up that says 1/100 machines fail to make it through the disinfection process, are you sure you want to do this? Am I risking further damage or problems with my computer, or does it simply mean the program may not work right on some machines?

Thanks for the advice, and I will continue after hearing back! Thanks again!!!

    Logs are attached

The problem I have been experiencing for several weeks/months now, is with my Trend Micro Internet Security 12 software. Whenever I try to run a scan, a window pops up with the message "This feature is still initializing. Wait a few moments and try again later." This comes up no matter how long I wait.

I ran through the cleaning process outlined on this website. Hopefully I did everything correctly and the attached logs are complete. If not, please let me know what else needs to be done. Obviously at this point, I am still having the problem with Trend Micro. Thanks very much for any help you can provide.

It is true that the act of removing malware can sometimes cause a problem that can make a PC unbootable. However this is very rare and as I see from the second thread you started (which will be merged into this one), you ran ComboFix without a problem.

Your Trend Micro program has been broken my the malware that you have. Rather ironic that it did not protect you from something that it is supposed to be designed for.

I will work up malware fix in my next message tomorrow. However in the meantime I suggest you do the below.

    Uninstall TrendMicro
    Reboot
    Reinstall TrendMicro

Let me know if it seems to work afterwards.

Thanks for your time and efforts. After cleaning and reinstalling it seems to be working normally. If there is anything else I can or should do, please let me know.

My virus protection software will expire within the next year (Trend Micro). Being so knowledgeable in this area, do you have an opinion on what company's virus/protection software is best?

Yes I will give you steps below.

There is no clear cut best! Things change with each new version being removed and malware changes daily. If you are happy with what you use and do not mind paying for it then stick with it. Otherwise you could try one of the free tools that will be covered in my final instructions when we get to them.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_06\bin\jusched.exe"

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
