Combofix?

I see in the malware forums that people are having a lot of problems with the Combofix program, I guess due to some recent update to it.
I'm working on a computer tomorrow and that has always been one of my tools, (actually I just follow the R&R thread). But I'm hesitant to use this program right now.
Can anybody say if Combofix has been fixed?

If i was you brandy i'd still do the R&R thing, but see if you can do it without having to use CF, as i don't think the bug has been fixed as yet !

    Hi BP

I have noticed that Chas has now put CF back into the R&RM so must now be updated and OK to run.

Yes combofix is good to run again but as you know it is a powerful tool that if used improperly could render a computer useless.

    Rusty,
How can I ignore you. I'm afraid your avatar is going to leap off the screen and punch me! Us happy, dancing cows don't like pain, it hurts too much.:-D
Now I'm in angst, which instruction do I follow?rolleyes

Seriously, thanks, (to Kes and halo), for the info. I always use this program carefully and according to the guide. If I find little or nothing with the other scans and all seems well, i won't even run it and I'll probably be even more conservative with it going forward, at least until we have a spell of no problems with it.

    Trailing seas to all!:wave

OK! I had a problem with my winXP (worm) and went to R&RM first! GREAT!!:clap

Now, I found this topic cause the steps leading up to Combofix seem to have fixed the problem!:clap

So do you have to do combofix, if the others fixed the problem?:confused

Thanks, this site has been a great help so far!

If you have malware or something on your computer I say yes. Many people runs the scans and doesnt post the logs for the (pros) to handle and give you procedures on how to get rid of it. Just scanning wont always get rid of it.. a (malware fighter) can see behind the scenes where we cant. You cleaned what the program says its bad but maybe theres extra stuff in other places.. Many people also say thanks the programs cleaned it and 2 days later you see them posting again saying its back! OMG then they finally listen and do all the Read and Run and the posting of ALL logs. So yes do all the scans it ask you to including combo fix which is fixed at this time. And please be patient with a reply it can day some days. They go 1st to last.. but this is the best place you'll get for cleaning.

    Thank You!
One of the reasons I asked was because I did not post a problem thread yet.

After I get done with the scans should I start a thread giving results?:confused

Yeah its good to make the thread and post the logs at the same time. Cause if you make a thread then go back after scans posting logs.. its can be consider bumping and add more time to your response. Another thing if you cant get all programs to run then dont stop and say they wont work.. get as much as you can ran on your computer.

The source (bleepingcomputer.com) version of Combofix is now OK to run.

I can only assume MG has kept up it is usually pretty good in that department.

However I would definitely recommend ditching any copies you have downloaded in the last three weeks and may have on a usb stick or whatever.

Yes Chaslang is very upto date with the malware apps and is generally in contact with the devs and the forums of those apps to keep current, think they where just awaiting an update from sUbs on this, now seems ok as Chas put the links back in the guide

I agree with your comment on users deleting any versions they have and TBH always if using an app like this download again, over using a saved one as they do change frequently.

I have not heard anything pertaining to ComboFix.

It knocked out my MSCONFIG manager one time. I got it back though.

I have a question. Should I turn off system restore when running ComboFix? I heard malware can hide in there.

The recent bug issues with ComboFix have been fixed - it is safe to use under supervision. You should NOT turn off system restore until advised, because an infected restore point is better than not having any at all. When you are instructed to AFTER malware cleaning - "toggling" your restore points system will remove ALL restore points except the most recent, which would be created after you have been given our " All Clean " boilerplate.
