Comctl.dll and MSgina.dll probs w/ WinXp

Hi Guys N' Gals;
I have a new twist on a prob. Maybe there is another solution other than re-installing WINXp. I get a error of Comctl.dll and MSgina.dll preventing WinXP to load. I've attempted to logon under Safe Mode and restore from the last known good configuration and that fails. What other alternative do I have other than Re-installing WinXp over the other and IF I do, will that overwrite or prevent the existing programs and files that I really need from being lost in sands of time.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated! :confused

Perhaps you can run these?

1. Run a sfc /scannow. Microsoft article: Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System File Checker
2. Run a chkdsk. Microsoft article: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP.
