I found that I could download Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun from EA's website. So I downloaded it and it saved it to a .rar file (and my default program was Google Chrome to open it.)

    Here's EA's freeware website-
    http://www.commandandconquer.com/classic/

The installation instructions say to unzip the file but my file is not zipped...

    Here's the instructions-
    http://na.llnet.cnc3tv.ea.com/u/f/eagames/cnc3/cnc3tv/TibSunFreeware_install.html

I am unsure of how to play the game ????
    Please help!!

I am running an HP HDX with Windows 7.
Also, my machine is capable of running in Windows XP Mode .... Does CnC have to run on an older machine???

I'm looking at it now, q'd file and it says it's a .rar file.

What kind of file do you have?

A .rar file is another form of .zip file, kind of. It's two different kinds of a compressed archive, but Windows won't automatically know how to open it.

Download and install 7-zip, it knows. Right-click your downloaded file, pick "7-Zip", and pick "Extract Here". That will extract the .rar archive's contents to a folder called "EA Games". Move that entire folder to C:\Program Files. Then go to that folder, open it, open the next C&C Tiberian Sun folder, and in there you will see, among other things, a short-cut to "Play Tiberian Sun".

Note that when I try to play it I get an error saying that it's missing a few dll files. If I find a solution and/or work-around, I'll come back and post it here.

lol I was just editing to say I misread the first line, but yeah, you need 7zip or winrar to extract (unzip) the files to a folder.

But thanks for the link, my power went out so I lost my que slot dammit, gotta restart the d/l.

Thanks mimsy! That is what I needed.

But I get the same problem that you have...

It says "One or more of the DDL were missing or damaged. Please reinstall."

Command and Conquer freeware download error

I got my Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun download thanks to the help of some MajorGeeks....

But now I get an error when I try to play the game it says...

"One or more of the DDL were missing or damaged. Please reinstall."

Another person also had the same error. Is there a way to fix it or should I re-download the game?

    Hi

Good option from Ned and with older apps this does tend to help, also as I just read the instructions page, it may also be worth while doing what Ned posted above in "run as administrator" to the registerWOL.exe file as by running as admin you allow the application rights to register dlls and also access to put any data into the registry as some older apps dont have this access.

Downloading the game now to test some options in Windows 7 x64.

    Okay, I got it. :)

To get it running, this is what I did:

    First this:

Then go to the EA Games folder, and open the folder names "Command & Conquer: The First Decade". I clicked on the shortcut to "Play Tiberian Sun" and set the compatibility to "Windows 98/Windows ME" and checked the box to Run as Administrator. Then I opened the folder "Command & Conquer(tm) Tiberian Sun(tm) and then the folder "SUN". In there, I set the comaptibility for all .exe files I could find, to the same as the shortcut: "Windows 98/ME, and run as Admin. There should be three files to do this to.

Now the game starts, runs, has sound working just fine, and it let me start a new campaign no problem.

It didn't let me use my wireless mouse, which made gameplay kind of, eh, non-existent, but I blame that on the mouse. Wireless mice were not around in 1998. ;)

    EDIT:
Problem. The laptop's touch pad does not work either. All my wired mice are PS2, and the laptop doesn't have a port for that. I don't have an adapter either. Can someone confirm that it's possible to have a working mouse in the game?

    Hi Mimsy

Yes I installed it today in Windows 7 32bit, and run the registry file and then the registerWOL file (did run this as admin) and did as your instructions mentioned in compatability mode, my bluetooth mouse works fine in the game.

I'm in 7 64-bit, that might be why it's not working as well for me then. I switched to a different wireless mouse (a Logitech as opposed to my Microsoft one) and now I have a moving cursor that can click on things.

I say we call this a victory for joint effort and team work! :major

stuckon, how are things working for you? :)

Yeah was close to a 32bit machine at the time, just did the same in 64bit and its also fine, my mouse is a Microsoft Lazer 8000 but also tried my Arc mouse to see if mice made a difference for me.

Indeed good effort from all as its not a light download, plus with old games they can BSOD and cause issues with newer OSes.

Glad its working for you stuckon :)
