Hello! I'm having a problem with Command Antivirus 4.93.7 on a Windows 98 SE machine with a 350MHz processor and 256MB of RAM. It keeps blue screening (I don't think it's a Windows blue screen, but something Command generates) saying "CSAV_DVP Scan engine initialization failed". It does not happen all the time, but probably 1 out of 5 times. We tried reformatting and installing Windows XP sp2 but it is putting warnings in the event logs to the same effect. It almost looks like it is looking for a registry entry that is not there and erroring out. Has anyone heard of this with the latest update? Thanks in advance for your input!

    Welcome to MGs!

This is really not an issue for the malware forum. In reality it is something you should be discussing with Authentium since it sounds like a problem in their software that occurred with a recent update you installed.

Thanks, Authentium is little to no help... they said to uninstall and reinstall, which is what we tried in the first place... just thought someone may have seen this before and wanted to check. Thanks for the reply!

My answer for companies like this is to not use their software at all! You could consider uninstalling it and using one of the free tools mentioned in the below link:

We are thinking about changing to Symantec, but unfortunately it is for a school district and we have to use it until our license expires...

I can understand a business or school etc wanting to go with a big name brand but you will not find too many advocates of Symantec or McAfee in these forums. They are massive resource hogs and Symantec is worse than McAfee. Also we see too many issues with Symantec not being able to fix problems. In many cases they do not even detect a problem that they even have special tools for detecting. And also, they often do not remove the problems when they are detected.

However back to your Command AV. You said that you have to use it until your license expires, but based on your first message it sounds like you cannot use it anyway.

I understand your position with regards to Symantec and McAfee (I don't like either really - my fiancee has McAfee and it disables itself all the time). However, while I have a say in things, it is ultimately not my decision as to which antivirus we use. I had PC-Cillin for the longest time and it worked like a charm.
Back to Command: Other models of computers work fine. Only on this particular model we can't utilize the dynamic virus protection, but scanning manually works.

Do you mean the model of the PC or did you mean which OS it is running?

Do you have any similar model PCs with the same Win98 SE OS running it?

When you uninstalled it, did you reboot afterwards and then clean up all folders and registry traces related to it before installing again?
