Alright, same cool comp, 1Gb RAM, WinXP, P4 3.01 HT..
I can do absolutely nothing for 12 hours on the comp and when I come home and look at the commit charge, it's up by, oh, 800Mb.. why is this and how can I fix it?
    Thanks,
    Josh

Uhh... did those posts just disappear? Lovely, and my question goes unanswered.

Do you think people live on this message board?

Give it time, you will see real answers.

We need more info to answer this anyway. Look on your process list. Which processes are taking the most memory?

No he had let 5 posts already on this and they are all gone now :(

    There were three.

They were removed from the thread because they were irrelevant.

Meh, I would believe that people DO live on this message board, they certainly do on Gaia and AnimeTheme... and plenty of others.

Anyway, Explorer.exe, svchost.exe, csrss.exe, and Logitray.exe are the ones that begin to eat up more and more VM as the day passes.

Which becomes the big one though? What is the ram useage for each?

Explorer and svchost seem to be the ones that start eating it up, at like 22,000K for each.

One of the beauties of MG, for me here in OZ at least, is that people DO live on this message board.
Time zone differences mean that no matter what time I get on MG, usually 4am local time daily, someone is there, somewhere in the world, to help out.
    And vice versa (I hope).
Long live MG.:D Long live those who "live" on the message board. :D
Thanks to yourself (in USA), Halo (in UK) and Insomniac (in Sydney) , plus lots of others, the world is pretty well bracketed. :D Bazza

That doesnt account for 800mb. I guess you are gonna have to give us an entire breakdown.

That'll be your swap space being used up. Not sure why though, but with all that swap, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

The commit charge number on the left hand side doesn't include the paging file. If that is all of the processes, then its something hiding itself, so to speak. Best check out the spyware forum.

Start here, and make a post there after going through it:

Damn that's a lot to do, but I guess I'll do it this weekend or something.. or just segment and do it after school when I'm not on crew call. Thanks man!

Keep taking a stab at it, we'll figure it out. :)

I've done the 2 virus scans, and RAV detected... gtsdll.ini as a virus. An .ini for an IRC mod? Heck, the dll's aren't shown to be infected... that makes absolutely no sense...

Then tell me why my swap space and ram are a combined total on the right, and on the left there's almost always a number exceeding my 384mb of ram when I'm playing cs or whatnot.

Allow me to elaborate to be more specific.

When your machine needs more ram than you have, it swaps to virtual memory, in the form of the paging file. The amount it needs is listed + your physical ram to the left. Your entire paging file+physical ram is listed to the right.

So to say the left side number is ram+ plus a bunch of swap file is wrong (in this case at least). If that were the case, your commit charge would be all of your ram, + paging file every boot. I know I don't boot with a 2gb+ commit charge every boot.

The poster is showing over a 1gb commit charge. Some of that is virtual memory (a small amount) sure. However, it IS a problem, and not normal.

So to say not to worry about it, is erroneous, too.

To make the above statement correct, you should have said:

That'll be your most of your ram plus some swap space being used up. Not sure why though, but I would worry about it.

ESPECIALLY since the process list doesnt account hardly any of it.

Well, I've done all the standard scans now, and MS Anti-Spyware caught some eDonkey2000 things... that's about it. *Sigh*.

Well since I couldn't edit the previous post I'll give you an update and a tad of back-story: I got edonkey a while back and had to configure the router to try and connect to some server. Well, I never disabled those entries in my router's firewall settings. Thus I just DID disable them and delete them entirely, perhaps that's what's causing such problems...
    (Hopefully I don't have w32.Alcan...)

Next update: left the comp on overnight and when I got up the Commit was 951Mb. The internet was all but disabled, only my IM programs were still online, mozilla firefox wouldn't take me even here.
So I Rebooted and it works just fine.

Go through this, disable all non MS services and startup items. See if the problem persists. If it doesn't, then try to narrow it down by enabling only a couple of things at a time, till you find your culprit.

So you want me to do a clean boot and leave it running all day??

Out of curiosity, what service pack are you running? None? 1, 2?

If two, are you running any p2p clients or bit-torrient clients during this time? These apps do love bandwidth which does love cpu cycles.

    1) None and 2) KazaaLiteRev and Limewire, but not all the time. I turn them on when I want them, close them when I don't.

I haven't done the clean boot just yet, but I've cleaned my comp several times and checked to see if there was anything hidden running with Process Explorer. I've seen nothing out of the ordinary...
