when i try to turn on my computer....the CPU and PSU fan goes on for about a second....then the power light on the front stays on, but nothing else happens. What is this? is it the mobo? PSU? both?

Does the system boot if you disconnect all disk drives (floppy, optical, and fixed) and remove all adapter cards (except for video)?

If not, most likely it's the motherboard, IMO, but there's no way to be sure with the system behaving this way. You need to try the system with a known-good PSU. I would not try the PSU with a known-good system because a bad PSU can short out a mobo. It's far less likely for a bad mobo to short a PSU.

Once you know it's not the PSU, you may also wish to test the RAM video card, and CPU before deciding that the mobo is indeed at fault.

Also is this a new build or has the prob just occurred?can you remember anything you did just before the faliure, left it overnight, thunderstorm, power cut,has the comp been moved recently.

The specs would also help read the announcemnt stickie at the top of the forum ;) ,first and most simple reset the cmos jumper/or remove the battery for 20 secs replace and try and boot, your manual will have instructions that will show you where the jumper and battery are ;)

Yup, the computer was moved...a 50 minute ride. The computer is about two years old, but was working untill i tried to turn it back on (it successfully turn off, with no problems). It also did not receive any hard hits. Also 6 other of the family's computer came in the same ride...and does not have any problems. It doesn't start up at all, even with everything unplugged. There are two plugs on my mobo. the main power, and then another square one with four of hte connections. Nothing happens when this one ins not plugged in.

leave the atx 12v in at all times!,shouldnt damage anything out but can draw too much current through the main mobo power, please m8 read the announcement we need your specs!,have you tried to reset the cmos yet,if unsure what or where post so.

If it didnt take a hit,my next suspicion is you have moved house got your comp hooked up ASP and somewhere along the line you have had to turn off main power to the house while your comp is plugged in to the socket,if so this could have fried the board

I had a problem like this once and my onboard video ended up being dead and I had to buy a card. If you are using a card and have onboard, try that.
