Comp. keeps restarting, has virus, can't enter safe mode

I will start by saying I'm a dork about computers. My husband's computer has the virus Spy-Agent bv!inf. Couldn't clean, quarantine or delete. Now the computer keeps restarting itself and I can't even go into safe mode. Please help. Don't know what to do. It is an older HP (windows 98) that we have installed XP on. If we use the Recovery disc we got with the computer, we lose the XP plus everything else on there. Any suggestions??

I would love to follow all the steps you suggested, however the computer shuts off and restarts before I can do anything. I have tried every option after pressing F8, hoping to get in to some form of safe mode but just keep getting a restart. Please help!

You are really in the wrong forum because problems like this are typically not malware related. They typically a problem within the OS. Often times it is a corruption of the registry.

It probably was not a very good idea to install Windows XP onto a PC they is older and that was shipped with Windows 98. I doubt that it really has adequate specs to properly support Win XP.

Why would your try to go back to your Windows 98 Recovery CD? Why wouldn't you just use your Windows XP disk?
