if you want to install Windows XP on a drive in that system, you're going to have to install a fresh copy so that the correct system drivers are loaded during setup. Its a virtual nightmare to try to use an existing XP drive from a different system in another system, due to all the specific drivers that are installed.

Throw the desired hard drive in the system, and boot to your Windows XP setup disc, wipe the partitions and make a clean format and install of the OS.

I f your hd jumper is correct, unplug ide cable from hd, start up with cd in drawer, boot to cd, once windows files start loading, hook ide cable back up, if the jumper is wrong, it wont reconize what you just did, most of the old hp's was set to cable select. ed

A blank screen, that dont make sense. The pc should still go into post screen just like it always did, are you sure you just unhooked the hard drive ide cable?. ed

Lets start over, unplug power supply from psu or wall socket, pull mother board battery out for a few minutes, when first screen comes on, get into bios[setup] not sure what key on yours, del, maybe,f2,f10. Set first boot priority to cd-rom, insert xp cd and save, maybe f10 to save, maybe enter. When it says any key to boot from cd, hit it quick, dont wait, lets see how it goes. ed

Do you have another reader[ cd-rom] to try in the place of the one you are now using, i dont think it is reading the disc. ed

When the cd is read the first thing you will see is, Setup is inspecting your hardware. I dont think it's ever got that far, yet. ed
