Have a very untechie friend who has been given a HP Pavilion dv6500 laptop, but it seems the RTC battery has failed as the date resets on every boot. As these batteries are easily available I'd like to replace it for her on next visit but I've never even seen one of these machines let alone tried getting inside.

Anything I need to know, or any special tools required? I'm not a professional repairer but quite happy replacing bits and pieces as necessary.

Thanks tgell, it does look simple enough, but after the difficulty I had removing the base covers of my own Gericom, for which a watchmakers size crosshead screwdriver was required, I don't want a 50 mile drive only to find I don't have the necessary when I get there.

    Hi guys,

I just wanted to add that I was doing a quick search to see if the RTC battery was standard model and came up with varying results. Most results show a wrapped battery with a connector rather than just the battery as in the insidemylaptop guide. I don't really know which is correct.

HP's service manual for DV6500 Entertainment notebook shows the wrapped battery. But I don't know if sub-models might use the plain battery. Just something you might want to be aware of if you don't want to purchase the battery before being sure it will fit.

Edit the manual says the memory/WAN covery is held by 2 Phillips 2.0x5.0 screws. If that helps--it is Greek to me.

Thanks sach2. I had d/loaded the HP manual but missed the bit about the screws, which is important info that I need to understand properly. Looks to me as if the battery does come in some sort of adapter so I shan't buy one without.

I've been trying to get a definitive answer but can't. I will say that every actual picture of the motherboard I have found matches the insidemylaptop photo with the standard RTC battery so I think you are fairly safe with that type despite the picture in the manual.

    Sorry for causing confusion. :(

Edit: Here is a link to the (supposed) board and it seems to match the other pictures. http://www.usa-battery.com/hp-dv6500-dv6600-dv6700-intel-motherboard-460900001-gf-p-3934.html
