    Hello
Working on a pc for a friend who had some virus so I reinstalled win xp32. It is a Compaq Presario SR1913WM. This box has about 4 virtual drives that I thought would go away with an os install but they are still there c, d, e, f,. During the os install it showed a large partition and under it on the screen it showed the virtual drives but I could not cursor to them to delete.
How can I get rid of these?

One problem it is causing is I tried to load the Nvidia chipset that defaults to load to the c drive. But since the c is a virtual drive and it is not letting me browse to a location it is not letting me install it.
    thanks for any help!
    Steve

I guess that aren't virtual drives, are the SD Card ports, do not delete them. Plug an SD card and you'll see how it works. That drives appears in function with this or more drives listed here in your PC specification:

    Memory card reader

    USB interface
    Supports the following cards:
    Compact Flash I
    Compact Flash II
    SmartMedia
    Memory Stick
    Memory Stick Pro
    MultiMediaCard

    Secure Digital (SD)
    Micro Drive
XD Picture Card (xd = extreme digital)

Take a look over the guide:

    Cheers.

thanks for the reply. I guess I better look closer. What is odd is the hard drive is the h drive not the usual c.

I'm trying to get the sound to work and there is no mixer installed I tried AC 97 and realtek but not much luck. I was hoping some of the drivers would be in the nvidia chipset but am having trouble installing them since it is trying to install to the c drive when it needs to be the h.

    thanks, Steve

Steve, is normal that these units appears like a hard drive, usually them takes drive letters as (H: ) (L: ) (M: ) but that's ok, i guess you installed 7?

About sound i'll check out for the drivers that you need, it's correctly installed the device?

    start > run > devmgmt.msc

There don't must appear any (!) Yello exclamation mark on the devices.

Don't forget to tell me the O.S to help you with drivers.

    thanks again,
I have yellow bangs on audio, PCI bridge device, PCI simple com controller, SM bus controller, unknown devices and video controller. I installed xp 32.
    The drive letters are I believe c, d, e, f, g, h. I think g is the cd drive.

Maybe there is a sliding door or something of the sort on the front to expose various media inputs. I'll look tonight.

    regards, Steve

Yes, that media inputs on front are the SD connectors, SD cards are like an USB but more small, check one:

    Look this SD

The Yellow Flags means that you haven't installed the drivers yet.

Here you'll found the drivers that you need:

Yes, I believe installing the chipset would take care of many of those but getting it to install is part of the problem.

The other issue is the sound mixer is missing. I ran into this script and wanted to try it under Start>Run...
    expand c:\i386\sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe
Supposed to be for if the sound icon is missing from the task bar.
    We'll see

    thanks, Steve

Check itmortiz's link. You want to look under original drivers. Sound is there as well as chipset drivers.

Just curious about the problem with the installation not going to the C: drive. Since this is such a new install it might be worth doing it again to get Windows on C:.

You were not worried about saving anything on the Hard drive but couldn't delete old partitions? You couldn't cursor but the keyboard was working otherwise?

Yes, this is where I got the drivers from and about the only one I had any luck installing was the modem. The original problem is messing me up in that when I try to install the chipset it is trying to install it to c: but in this box C is a media drive and says to free space to make room for the install.

It's not giving me the option to browse to a location of my choice which would be the h drive. I must have boogered the install or something this is wierd.

    thanks, Steve

Yes, it's probably worth trying again there isn't anything to try to save.

I couldn't cursor but the keyboard is working otherwise.

I tried installing the realtek driver but got a message that the Microsoft UAA universal audio archetecture driver needs to be installled first. So I installed that one then the Realtek but the mixer is still missing... :( It looked like it installed correctly.

I hope someone else sees something obvious that I am missing. I can't understand why XP wouldn't try to put itself on the C: drive if at all possible. I can't understand how the installer would mistake the 4in1 for possible HDs.

It's usually something simple that is getting overlooked. I wonder if I disconnected the 4 in 1 from the motherboard to trick it in going to the C but there must be a better way.

Seems like he haven't enough experience installing S.O, if need help with drivers he will need learn a bit more i guess.

You will have to install them manually then.

Not always the install wizard put the drivers. Do it manually selecting the device in the "Device Manager" start > run > devmgmt.msc
double clic in the device and clic "update driver", use the last option to select the device manually (not search in CD... the other one).

Extract the files that you ahve downloaded from the link i posted and select the correct driver per each device.

Good luck, tell us if need more help.

I went and disconnected the other media drives and reinstalled xp and it put it on the c drive so that is straightened out. I tried your manual method for the yellow bangs and was able to get rid of the LAN and PCI Simple comunication controller.

The remaining issues are getting the video and sound correct. I tried the video driver (original) and it said "Nvidia could not locate drivers that are compatable with your current hardware. I'm trying to use the on board video since someone has taken the nvidia card out of it.

The speaker is missing from the task bar and there aren't any sound devices installed. I tried installing the Realtek (original) driver and it says that Microsofts UAA High def driver needs to be installed first. I installed it and then tried the original driver and it still doesn't see the Microsft UAA driver.

    thanks for any help, Steve

I'm glad you got the OS back to C: that makes everything simpler if because of habit if nothing else.

On the graphics neither graphics driver installed (version 4.5 nor 8.2)? I would think the chipset ver 4.5 should go in first. Is this when you get an error?

    thanks for the reply,
Trying to think, the chipset (4.5) installed but trying the 8.2 graphics wouldn't work. I think since the graphics card is missing it's confusing it. It's also causing problems with the sound because they are integrated with the graphics card.

I was going to try a cheap sound card just to get something for sound. Just a sound blaster or something.

From the product specs I don't think there was a video card as part of original equipment.

The order of driver install would be chipset then graphics then sound.

Are you getting decent resolution on your display or are you stuck at very low resolution?

Any yellow question marks still in Device Manager?

I think you are right about not having a graphics card in this as original. It has a label that says NVIDIA GeForce 6100 on the front. But maybe that is the chipset not a card.

I still have 4 yellow bangs.

The resolution is decent but it's jerky like if you pull a dialog box across the screen.

Something else that is strange on the front it says the model is Presario SR1913WM but on the bottom of the case it says Presario SR1000. Maybe I'll have better luck with these other drivers.

Maybe starting a thread in the Drivers section will get you proper help. Getting the drivers installed should be a fairly straight forward process we are just missing something that Halo (drivers forum) will probably see right away. I'd go with the original SR1913WM model number as that seems very specific where the SR1000 seems to be a series rather than a particular model.

You ought use a software as Everest! to take a look over the real name of the hardware installed, then you'll be able to search the drivers byt the device in google.

Let's try with Everest if yoiu still needing the drivers, check out the hardware "video and sound" names and i'll help you to find out the drivers.

    Take care.
