    Compaq'd HD?

My sister just gave me a "new" 20GB HD that her "tech" had just installed in her Compaq, that is gone now!, and I cannot get it to show up in OS as a useable drive. My BIOS sees it, it shows up in POST, and in device manager and computer management console, but it does not show up in My Computer, or anywhere useable as a drive, no letter, no space, no nothin!!!. Linux can see it too, but cannot mount, cannot find superblock error. I removed the drivefrom the Compaq and it was second drive in a chain, 2 20GB drives. It worked in the Compaq, but the PC is gone. I know OEM makers do funny stuff, so I am wondering if this is part of something Compaq does and if I can use this drive??? It is a Quantum Fireball 20GB. I am using XP Pro, but have 98 and MEPIS 3.3, and other HDs and CD devices for setup options. Need to know if there is a way to clear this HD?

Your bios finds it.You have xp right?
    Try this.
    Control panel>administrative tools>Services>
turn on all logical disk management services.

I will try that if you think it will work after this: this morning I used a Win 98 startup disk to boot into DOS and tried to use fdisk to format the drive and it could not locate it. My BIOS does see it, it shows up at POST and in device manager of Win XP Pro, but if Fdisk can't find it, do you think this would work?

Does anyone know how to check a drive for viruses from DOS?

Is there a way to tell if it is just toast? It worked in the Compaq, and I have handled alot of computer parts and have never "zapped" anything???
