Hey i was running out of space on my harddrive so i decided to compress the harddrive and its currently doing it.

My question is will this compression increase the time it takes to open files and ultimately result in decreased performance?

Yes, by a small amount. The cpu has to decompress (decode) every file you open or look at, then re-compress anything it has to put back on that drive.
