Sorry, I'm new. Now that I think about it, the question is this: when a defrager is run is all the free space lumped together or are the files just put together and left where ever they landed?

Hi Battletoad, welcome to Major Geeks.

It depends on which defragmentation tool you're using and how you have it configured as to how files/folders are defragmented. I think either one of these:
Puran Defrag Free Edition or
MyDefrag also free
would do what you want. Personally I use Puran but MyDefrag is good too. Here is a list of some other favorites.

Puran has a "boot time" defrag feature that will defragment files that normally can't be defragmented(because they are in use) while Windows is running. It will also defragment in the back round as you use the computer, if you wish.

 

To expand on what plastidust said, some defragers concentrate only on defragmenting files,
whereas others also optimize the placement of files for better performance.
Both of the defragers that plastidust linked to optimize as well as defragment.

The Optimizing results in certain files being grouped together and some are placed
near the beginning of the disk for faster access. Gaps of free space may also be created
between those groups. MyDefrag does that and possibly also Puran Defrag.

Contig is a fast defrager from Microsoft's Sysinternals that concentrates on defragmenting without a lot of optimizing.
