I am getting a new computer and I need to move files from my old computer to the new one... The seller offers Detto Intellimover and Laplink PC mover. However, I want to make sure that I don't move any problems, virus/worms ect to the new computer. What is the best way to move them. Oh, will they move some of my programs, like zoom browser to the new system? What O'Great Ones, is the Way to go.

In my experience; the vast majority of programs are best "reinstalled" rather that being "moved" (or "copied"); from one PC to another. Simply copying programs; as well as the folders which contain them, can cause many problems because there is no way to adequately move the installed registry entries; which many programs and utilities include, to the new computer.

Additionally, many shareware programs have protections in place and are specifically designed in such a way that makes "copying" and/or "moving" them manually impossible or at least make this a very hard task to successfully accomplish; without encountering problems during and after the transfer process.

The Safest Method to Transfer Programs: Reinstalling programs by using the original Install CD files or .exe installation file that came with the program when you bought them (or downloaded them from the web); is the very best way to go about the transference of programs from one PC to another, at least in my opinion.

As for moving files, such as Word files, Excel, etc. my own personal favorite way to transfer these types of files is either by using CDs or DVDs to copy these files and transfer them.

Whenever I’m transferring such files to a new computer from PC that I’ll no longer be using; I always use a brand new CD-RW or DVD-RW disk as opposed to using an older or previously used disk as there is likely far less chance of and corruption occurring by using a brand spanking' new disk. Using this method I can not only transfer the files, but I have a ready-made back-up as well.

Another method available would be to copy the files to individual folders and then use a .zip or .rar compression utility to create compressed files; and then send and store them on my e-mail account. Of course, you will have to limit the size of the .zip files that you use to send to your e-mail account depending upon what the limitations are for the e-mail service that you use. For example; Yahoo free e-mail allows up to about 1 MB for .zip or .rar attachments.

Note: I have no experience as to the reliability of either Detto Intellimover or Laplink PC; so perhaps someone who has previously used these can chime in here.

    Good Luck!
