Im new to MG and didnt know where to post this, But any way..

My computer seems to continusly reboot, at first i thought it was my RAM, then my dad said i might have something installed something that is messing with it.
So after buying new ram, and formatting my hard drive, it still seems to reboot. I have no idea whats wrong with it, ive asked mates around at school and they think that it might be that my processor is over heating and i should buy new/more fans. some one allso mentioned that the hard drive im booting off may have something wrong with it. my specs are

AMD 2200+ xp duron (cooled by stock heat sink and fan), ATI Radeon 9600 128mg, 512ram (768 if you include the old stick), 2 hard drives 30gig (one im botting off) and a 80gig (just for random stuff)

If any one can help i would really apreciate it.

I can't figure out why you've posted this in the cooling/modding forum... perhaps you suspect it to be a heat issue?

Here's my guess. Try booting to safe mode. Watch the drivers load and take note of the last item displayed. Is it Mup.SYS? I pray for your sake that it is not.

I've been dealing with this issue on a computer for days--if not a full week now. It seems to be one of those: one symptom with a million different solutions... problem is, there's no way to tell which solution will work for you. Just Google Mup.sys (if that turns out to be your problem) The first result is a forum dedicated to various solutions. Read through it and try try try. I'm determined to figure this out eventually. My next step is to try swapping out the video card.

BTW, a format/reinstall doesn't seem to cure the problem. It seems that in most cases SP2 (or a hotfix for it) is conflicting with drivers--typically USB or VGA. So as soon as you update during a reinstall the problem shows up again. More buggy updates for buggy Service Packs on buggy OSs. At least we can count on consitancy.

    Good luck. Hope this helps.

Yea i thought the CPU was over heating, but wasnt sure

Like I said, try seeing what the last driver is that loads when you try to boot into safe mode. If you actually make it into safe mode, you have a different problem. We can go from there.

If you have any USB add-on cards, take them out. A lot of times it's as simple a problem as that.

ok its stopped continusly rebooting, now its just doing it randomly. i still hvant tryed getting into safe mode. but ill try as soon as i get home.

ok ive tryed the safe mode thing and it is what you feared, it boots up and the last driver is Mup.sys, i rang a mate of mine and he told me of how a way to remove it was, he said to boot from the win xp disk go into the repair console and then type in 'disable Mup.sys' after each try it would come up with a error that Mup didnt exist or that there was no cammand by that name.

im starting to think that its either the hard drive or power supply, or any other part

i allso dont have any SP update or any of the SP on there

like u guys mentioned there are lots of possibilities that can cause reboots... to be sure its not any temp related issue u should monitor ur temps by either using speed fan, MBM5 or some other application. Also it would be good to run some system stability scanning software such as sisoft sandra, prime95 or cpuburner.. there are lots of other ones...

Monitoring temps using those programs would be great... IF he could actually load windows to install them. They don't do you any good if you can't get into windows.

Now, he can check his temps in the bios, but we're talking about a computer that won't stay on for more than 45 seconds-- and again, doesn't even reach the desktop. So unless his heatsink fell off and he didn't notice it, I doubt this particular problem is a heat issue ;)

Ok the computer seems to be able to get into windows now, but it is still rnadomly rebooting, its doing it at random points, like i would be goiing through a website and it would reboot.

Or i would just leave it and listen to music and it would reboot, i think the computer is totally screwed cause some times it will continusly reboot at the first screen when you boot up the machine, or it would boot when windows is loading. and one of the major things that makes it reboot is R.O.S.E, when i load that up it wil get to a specific screen then reboot.

I ran a HD diagnostic tool to check for physicall problems useing a boot disk, but that came up clean. i all so checked out those forums your posted and was wondering how to change the option for windows to check for a new key board.

Here are my specs if it will help, most of them are under a year old except for the smaller HD:

    Amd 2200+ (Duron)
    768mg ram (DDR pc2700)
    30gig HD (seagate IDE)
    80gig HD (deskstar IDE)
    ATI Radeon 9700+ 128 mg

Sounds like a power issue. Are you using the stock PSU? See if someone has a spare they can lend you for a bit. Any recent upgrades that might tax your PSU?

if it is a power issue try booting with only one HD plugged in, but then again that pc doesnt look very power hungry...

You said it could have been ram but you havnt removed the old ram,you have just added more, mixing different brands of ram is a bad idea and can cause stability problems on its own.

So try removing the old ram and reseat the new ram in the first slot and try and boot your machine,if its stable the old ram is dead. :)

well i tryed with just the old ram in but it still rebooted, im starting to think that my old hard drive might have something wrong with it

Your old ram could be bad,TRY JUST THE NEW RAM!!

im going to format both hard drives then set them up exactly the same and test to see if both of them reboot, if they both reboot

There are vastly more efficient testing methods. I'll post around 4am when I'm at work... If you haven't formatted, don't yet.

i did try with just the new ram and it rebooted, i havnt rebooted yet i have to back everything up

    Okay, 4am turned into 7:30am...whatever.

So you've established that you can boot into windows with the new ram. Doesn't that solve your problem? I'm confused as to why you need to still reformat--unless you just want a clean setup--which I fully understand. (I I'm going to slipstream SP2 and reinstall soon. Taking a few days to try out a number of small apps and progs before I do.) Anyway, keep us informed. Let us know if the issue still seems to be resolved after a few days.

its still rebooting, even with the new ram in, im still thinking that my old hard drive may have something wrong with it,

turn off the autoreboot and check the bsod message... it might give u a clue to what the problem is....

metalnight, since you havnt updated windows and probably havnt been using a firewall, theres a 90 percent chance you are infected with something,I would recommend you read the stickies in the spyware forum and post a hijackthis log read the instructions very carefully, follow it to the letter or you will just waste the guys in there's time, once your comp is deemed free of spyware, adware, trojans, update it at windows and go from there. ;)

metal, what happened when you formatted the drive?

Also, have you checked for a bios update? I've read flashing the bios works for some people.

  29. MetalNight

nothing changed much when i formatted, i still havnt formatted my large drive though,

i havnt tried flashing or getting a newer version of the bios cause i dont want to mess around with it incase i majorly screw it up

allthought i applied the defult settings in bios and nothing changed

    MetalNight Private First Class

ok for any of those that are stil interested...

i formatted both drives, and installed windows.. Still rebooting
Formatted them again and installed windows on both and tryed one at a time.. still rebooting

    replaced the ram.. still rebooting

a mate told me that i should try replaceing the bios battery and see if that dose it, if not ill have to send it back to the shop, but i really dont want to

if you have any more ideas please tell me cause the people in the shops rip you off big time
