Have you tried a different player? Here's some of my personal favorites:
    VLC Media Player
    GOM Player
    M-Player
Media Player Classic (works best with a codec pack and is bundled with the KLite Codec Packs and with the Storm Pack, and others)

On the subject of codecs: run a codec 'checker' like Codec Installer that checks the codecs on your PC and will tell you if there's a possible problem or broken/missing codec. The KLite Codec Tweak Tool is good for this also. You could also try just installing a good codec pack; the two I already mentioned are excellent: KLite Mega Pack and the Storm Codec Pack. That should be anough to get you started. You can also try uninstalling WMP11 and re-installing. Does the crash happen with all clips, or certain types of clips?
