Computer Crashes When Browsing

I have a p4 3.4 GHz PC running Windows XP Pro SP2 that started acting slow a few days ago. Yesterday it began to restart whenever I started surfing the internet (in either Firefox or IE). I have gone through all the steps in the read me before asking document. All the virus scans - trend micro house call, symantec online scan and my own Avast scan - came up clean (I was able to do the online scans in safe mode without the system crashing). The spyware and adware scans found a few instances of adware and were fixed.

When I rebooted the system it still crashes when I open a browser and try to go anywhere. Could this be a virus, spyware or something wrong with the registry?

Thanks for checking for me - I wonder what can be causing this crashing? I have WinASO for my other computer, but I have avoided using it on the computer because I was worried I'd screw it up.

Don't know if I'm using a proxy - sorry, I'm not terribly technically literate - I do use a router for my internet, but I don't think that constitutes a proxy. Can you quickly let me know - don't want to take up too much of your time though -

I'll give that a try - I'll also try using WinASO on there and see if that helps speed up the pefromance.
