I have a problem that has been driving me nuts for MONTHS!!!

    Here it is:
I'm sitting at my laptop (Dell) in the Living room. It has a wireless adapter to the router. The desktop computer in the Den is hardwired to the router.

I can be at my desktop and see the folders on my laptop. I can create, delete, modify, etc...all I want from the Desktop onto the Laptop.

    HOWEVER!!!
When I'm at the laptop, I can open a windows explorer and see the folders on my Desktop (even on the F: drive, which is a 2nd internal hard drive).
Here's the problem: Any time I try to create a folder over the network to the Desktop....the desktop computer crashes and resets completely.

I can do this every time. Meaning, ANY time I create a folder from the lpt onto the desktop, it crashes. It even crashes if I open a file using the laptop and grabbing the file from the desktop and modify it. It doesn't matter if I'm trying to create/modify from the laptop to the desktop C: drive or the F: drive (2nd hard drive in the desktop)

This never happens in reverse (modifying a file, or creating a folder on the laptop by using the Desktop to do it)

What could be causing this type of problem?
(I think I might have put this in the wrong forum (hardware vs network), sorry.

Well right off the bat, I would think your Desktop Security settings got jacked up WAY high, so anytime anything tried to access it, your desktop says "Nope, Don't think so" and shuts itself down. Thats the only explination I can come up with. Lets see if any other geniouses out there know whats up :)

I checked my Desktop settings...and the Internet Zone is set for Medium Security. My Intranet zone is Medium-Low, Trusted set at Low, and Restricted set at High...and no sites are added in there.

I've been able to narrow it down to installing my antivirus. Didn't matter if it was AVG or Norton.

So...I guess my question now is: what is it in the antivirus programs that might cause this problem ?

Thats a good question. Im not too knowlegable on Anti-Virus programs. Definately check out the security settings though. There might be an option set to where, if someone or something tries to get into your system, it reboots, to kick them out. Although, if there is such an option, I've NEVER heard of it being set as Default.

    New info here:

This does seem to be a hardware problem to me as I have just realized this:

All the software on BOTH computers is same. Same AVG version with same settings, same ZoneAlarm with same settings, same software all around with a few exceptions:
    Laptop - WinXP is OEM
    Desktop - retail XP

    Problem in brief:
I can modify a file on the laptop by using the desktop.
When I modify a file on the desktop using the laptop, it crashes every single time.
This problem only started AFTER I installed my antivirus (AVG this time and Norton last time I reformatted several months ago)

The error that Windows is reporting after the crash is that it's a driver. Keep in mind though that AVG IS on the laptop and was there before when I was freely able to modify files on the desktop. It's after I put AVG on the DESKTOP that the crashing started

So...where can I go to look to find out how to fix this?

Go here and see if your problem can be found here

    http://www.grisoft.com/doc/42/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

If that doesnt work. Open up AVG and hit "Cntrl+B" This will allow you to E-mail technical support for AVG and you can tell them your problems and findings there.

Also be sure to check back here incase anyone else has a solution. Best of luck to you

There was nothing at the AVG support page regarding my problem.
I couldn't email them because I don't have the Pro version of AVG.

    INFORMATION UPDATE:
I can create folders and files all I want...as long as I create the new folder called New Folder (leaving it at Windows default name) and I can create new text documents as long as I leave it at the default name of New Text document. I can open those folders, no problem. I can even open the document called New Text Document. I can edit that document and even save it. However...it's when I try to either rename the folder and/or document. THAT is when the crashing is occuring.
If I create a new folder called Tracy, or create a new text document called Tracy Info....again, it crashes because I'm not creating a default name of New Folder or New Text Document.

    Any new ideas????

It sounds like it might be a hard drive problem...You might want to back everything up on that hard drive that keeps restarting, and reformat it, giving it a clean install.

I had already done that. Reformatted the C: drive. Just got done doing it. THAT is when the problem started...right after I installed AVG.

I did a Full format, not just a quick format.

Its gotta be something in AVG. Try uninstalling it, and see what happens then.
