Hi again. What service pack do you have? I know that you just reinstalled windows, and have you already installed updates and hotfixes? Also, I'm assuming that you're referring to CD's...is that correct?

Sorry for all of the questions, but it helps to get the big stuff out of the way first. : )

Did this start after changing the drive letter?

    Did it ever read them?
Have you look for firmware updates to the drive?

Hi Krit86lr, from what I can see SP1 is installed, updates and hotfixes are installed, should I install SP2 ? the disks are game disks one is 101 games for windows XP the other is a horse game I bought for my granddaughter, this was the same before I had to reinstall XP when drive was originally D, when I first reinstalled XP the 101 games actually showed up on the drive in my computer but only once, this is driving me crazy as I know they should work but no go. Foogoo mentioned firmware updates what is that?

I do appreciate you time and help

    Hi RobynR,

You definitely should look into getting SP2 http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/default.mspx.

Second, is your DirectX updated? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en.

Remember to reboot after each installation. To check for firmware upgrades:
start > control panel > system > Hardware Tab > click Device Manager > expand CD-ROM Drives > right click the extension > choose update driver.

All of these things are important to do, but I'm guessing that your source path is pointing to the wrong letter.

    Check back soon.

You may want to do this first. Be very careful. This is a registry adjustment.
start > run > (type) regedit

    In the Left Window Pane:
click the "+" next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
click the "+" next to Software
click the "+" next to Microsoft
click the "+" next to Windows
click the "+" next to Current Version
    click "setup"

Now look in the Right Window Pane: Look For
    1. Installation Sources
    2. Service Pack Source Path
    3. SourcePath
    * All of these need to say D:\. If any of them say E:\ > double click the name, and delete the E:\, and type D:\

Now exit regedit, and reboot your computer. If any of these instructions are not clear, please ask questions. It is not safe to take chances with your registry.

PS The DirectX update is for games, and you have to get this update manually.

    Hi R,

If you aren't comfortable with the registry you can try changing your drive back to E:\, and see if that works.

    Keep us posted. : )

Ohhh. That's sad. I wouldn't suggest giving up that easily, but if it isn't worth the hastle...I understand. There is always a solution. Sometimes it takes a bit of troubleshooting to narrow down the problem.

I do understand if it's more trouble than it's worth. Take care!

Are there any ? or ! in Device Manager?

Try (in Device Manager) uninstalling the drive in question, reboot and Windows will do the rest.

I'm glad that you didn't throw the CD's away. :) Yes computers can be a headache at times. (Note my picture LOL)

    1. After upgrading to SP2 reboot your computer.

    2. Click 'Start' > Programs > (at the top) Windows Updates

    3. When the updates have finished defrag your computer. Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter > Defragment

*Steps 1-3 are necessary maintenace that you need to do after upgrading to SP2. They won't make your CD work. :) (I don't think)

    4. Try Insomniac's suggestion. Start > Control Panel > (double click) System > Hardware Tab > Device Manager > (click the "+") next to CD-ROM drive > (right click) the drive after it is expanded > choose "Uninstall" > reboot your computer.

    5. If if still is not working I need you to look up the error. That will tell us almost exactly what the problem is.

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > choose Event Viewer > in the right window pane double click "System", and under the "Source" column look for an error or warning that relates to your issue. Double click the report. Write down the Source, Event ID # > Category # > and the Description.

I hope that this isn't too overwhelming. I'm just trying to give good instructions. If you have any questions, or run into any problems please post back, and someone will help you.

Good Luck!! You'll get it. :)

Hi no go I think this computer has gremlins in it, I have another more urgent problem at the moment, I have downloaded a thing called a DEC VOICE RECORDER, my granddaughter does schooling by Distance Education and this is for her to talk to her teacher by microphone and send the recorded convesations by email when I hit the record button I get a mssage saying DEC has encountered a problem and needs to shut down, I had a look on the site for the DEC and found this note I'm wondering if this could be my problem can you help me. Robyn ( Note below )

NB: Some teachers have reported difficulty with installation on some DET computers. It appears that a setting for 'hyperthreading' might be enabled in your BIOS. This can be a security problem and it is recommended that it be disabled. To do this, you need to interrupt the start sequence (sometimes F2, look at your screen, it will tell you what key) and from the Advanced TAb, disable hyperthreading
