Computer freezes intermittently at desktop after startup

Only happens every so often, sometimes only maybe once every week or so. It boots okay, then freezes at around 5 to 10 seconds at the desktop screen. Doesn't matter whether you move the cursor or not. Recently ran all of the clean up tools in the read me thread for another problem I had. It fixed that problem, but unfortunately not the freezing. Here's the thread where TimW kindly helped: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=229532

The day after TimW confirmed the logs were clean, the computer froze twice in a row, but has been okay since. I've also got a temp folder problem on my other computer. Do I need to start a new thread for that?

    Thanks.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, Billy32.

Unfortunately, intermittent freezes such as yours can be the hardest problems to troubleshoot.

You might try looking at your Event Viewer for any obvious flags at or near the time of the next crash.

If the freeze occurs with any regularity, try booting into Safe Mode and see if the symptoms change, which would indicate some startup or 3rd-party program is causing the issue.

You might also try disabling any 'phone-home' applications (antivirus definitions updates, any update schedulers) in case they are are hogging resources at startup.

Thanks for the swift response Caliban.

Yeah, I was thinking that was the case, thanks anyway. It might be Avast causing the problems. I'll disable it, to see if that helps.

    Hi

As well as the great info that Caliban posted above as it will help us diagnose your hanging issue, try Process Monitor and when you get the freeze see if you can see with this app what is hanging, may need to run it and leave it running for a while so that when the PC freezes/hangs you have the app already running so you can check the list of running processes for the one using the most CPU %

Do also list all your installed security applications on this PC as too many of the same ilk can cause a hang of the CPU as likened apps will be scanning the same thing at the same time.

Yes for the temp issue with your other PC, do start a new thread on that issue and give us as much info as possible, Windows version and Service Pack, to what the exact issue is and what you have tried to do to fix it so far.

Hmm, Disable your antivirus - Avast?? rolleyes

Why not try turning Off the Automatic Update feature. ;)
Click the "Settings" tab at upper left and just set "Engine and Virus Definitions" to Manual.

    What version are you using.
Current ver. for the Free edition is 5.1.677.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but I think I've pinpointed the problem. Kodak Easyshare software was loading at the startup (2 items), even though this program was uninstalled. Ran the uninstaller from the Kodak website and it managed to get rid of one item from startup, but the other still remains. Plus there's still loads of Kodak left over files in various locations. Would it be ok to manually delete these from the search results?

mjnc - sorry, yeah thats what I meant. :-o

    Hi

Yes if the Kodak EasyShare app has been deleted and you now find references to it, then yes manually delete them.

    OK! - not a problem. :)

If you just need an easy way to manage startup items, Startup Control Panel Standalone Version 2.8 is small, fast loading and easy to use.
