Computer freezes when closing folders

A couple of months ago I had an issue with Vundo.B which I was able to get cleaned. However, at about the same time, I started having a problem where my computer would freeze when I closed various folders. I would get a message stating that "drwatson has encountered a problem and needs to close". If I went to the task manager and closed drwatson, the computer would come back to life. From doing some research, some people believe that this problem is associated with malware - but no one knows for sure.

I have run all the scans in "read me first..." and it has not solved the problem. I would appreciate it if someone could look at my log to see if they can find any problems.

Thanks for your help....you guys are a great service to everyone.

I doubt any of the below has anything to do with your problem but they should be fixed anyway. Your problem could be more of a Software or Hardware issue.

In the future, please follow forum protocol and do not post a HijackThis log unless it is requested.

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1) If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2) Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3) If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

I deleted the lines that you suggested. As you suspected, it did not help the situation. It must be a software issue. I will start investigating that.

    Here is the new log.

Thanks for all the help. You do a great service for the entire community.

Okay! You may want to give the below a run (you may need your WinXP SP2 CD, so have it handy.).

Open a command prompt windows by clicking Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. Enter the below command follow by the enter key and describe what happens.

    sfc /scannow

If this does not help, you should post a message in the Software Forum for your problems.

Just FYI. I finally figured out the problem. Based on various suggestions I uninstalled MS Java and made sure that Sun Java was installed. However, I did not know that my D-Link / Verizon DSL required MS Java - Sun Java was not OK.

When I was reinstalling D-Link it had a window that said MS Java was required and would install it.

Once installed, I have not had any problems.

    Wierd but true.

Thanks for the info on D-Link. That is pretty dumb on there part. MS Java is not even supported anymore. Is this an older router?

I don't even understand why anything is needed to be installed on your PC for your router to work properly. Configuring it....yes maybe they use some special tools and have certain ways that windows or forms popup. But normal operation.......that seems strange.

The router is only a few months old. Identification is DWL-G520. I bought it at Best Buy. Since it was new I assumed that I would have no problem with removal of MS Java.

Strange! I wonder what it is about MS Java that they need. Do they actually say in there manual that MS Java mustbe used and no other Java can be used!

I don't understand why this would be causing your PC to freeze and Dr Watson to popup.

I don't see anything in the manual or online about needing MS Java. The way I found it was that since I could not find the cause of my computer freezing, I was trying to reinstall any of the software that I had installed in the last couple of months.

When I was doing the reinstall of the D-Link software, it said that MS Java was not installed and would install it. Since I reinstalled the S/W I have not had the problem. I know this was the problem because I was doing one S/W at a time to see if I still had the problem. Restarting once or twice between each install to verify that I still had the problem.

Maybe you should check with them to see if Sun Java is okay to use. Perhaps it is just that something is wrong with your Sun Java installation? MS Java is no longer supported and is full of security holes.
